Legacy was never available with 1.8 litre motor. Legacy has no distributer. Legacy uses direct ignition. Legacy timing is computer controlled and not adjustable. loyale was only available with 1.8 litre. If you have 1991 subaru and you are sure the motor is 1.8 litre your subaru is a called a Loyal and is a piece of junk that nearly destroyed the subaru name. Get rid of the Loyal and buy a good used Legacy. Yes, make certain you have a Legacy and not the smaller Loyale-- Legacy has a more rounded nose, and Loyale has sharper edges. If you have a Loyale, (or are overseas and have a Loyale motor in a Legacy), the timing setting is approx 20 degrees BTDC if you have fuel injection (single or multiple injectors), or approx 8 degrees if you have a carburetor.

Check and record the thread length of the old cable found sticking out of the adjuster block on the clutch arm. It is tricky to change the clutch cable. There is a clip that holds it on the clutch pedal and it hooks over the clutch arm down by the bellhousing on the other end. The clutch arm is fairly easy to access and remove the cable from the engine compartment. The clutch pedal end took a little while. I had to undo the fuse box and let it hang to acces the pedal arm. The cable hooks on this end also, but has a little clip that holds it on the arm. Once the cable is unfastened from the arm, you can pull it out through the firewall. For access,if fitted remove electrical relay box,(3 bolts)and lay aside,remove hydraulic oilreservoir(1 bolt)and lay aside upright. Measure thread length of inner cable thru the adjuster on clutch arm and note it. Remove retaining clip and cable from clutch arm. In car,remove return spring and cable hook from pedal. Remove cable assembly from bulkhead pulling thru engine compartment. Push new cable thru bulkhead and reconnect cable and return spring to pedal. Fit cable inner to clutch arm and reset thread to noted length. Back in car,measure distance from top of clutch pedal pad to rim of steering wheel,then depress clutch fully and remeasure.Difference should be 134 to 141mm on rhd car.Adjust at clutch arm to correct it. LHD is 129 to 130mm. When dimension is correct,refit retaining clip on clutch arm. Note Clutch pedal correctly set will be higher than brake and have no free play. Refit relay box and hydraulic res.

R65 type transmission. Remove the air cleaner. Working in the engine compartment slide the clutch cable and fitting from the clutch release lever on the top of the gearbox. Release the cable sheath grommet from the bracket on the gearbox. Working in the drivers footwell release the 3 securing clips and remove the fusebox cover. Release the securing clips and remove the driver's side lower fascia panel . Reach up behind the fascia and unhook the end of the clutch cable from the pedal. Working in the engine compartment pull the cable through the bulkhead. Note cable routing and release the cable from any other retaining clips. Refitting Lubricate the cable bulkhead bush with rubber grease. Route the cable through the engine compartment and throught the bulkhead. Working in the drivers footwell reconnect the cable to the foot pedal then push the rubber bush on the cable fully into the bulkhead tube until the steel washer on the cable seats on the tube. Pull the clutch lever through its full range of movement to set the cable self adjustment mechanism. PG1 type transmission Remove air cleaner. Jack up front of vehicle onto axle stands. Working in the engine compartment slide the clutch cable and fitting from the clutch release lever on the top of the gearbox. Release the cable sheath grommet from the bracket on the gearbox. On right hand drive models release the cable from the clip attached to the coolant hose. Rest as for R65

First, unhook the battery, block the wheels and jack up the left side of the car. Crawl under and look straight up from the axle; you will find the clutch lever on the side of the transmission. Unhook it. Then open the engine compartment and unhook the accelerator cable from the carb. Go into the driver's footwell and flip the gas pedal forward. You will see two bolts holding the pedal cluster on. Remove them, and work the cluster out of the hole it's in. If the clutch pedal goes all the way to the floor when you step on it, three things could have happened - well, four if you count the transmission breaking but that's the least likely to happen. First, the hook on the end of the clutch pedal could break. If that's what happened, it's held on with a little bolt on the side. Remove the bolt, slip out the old hook. Grease the shaft of the new one, stick it where the old one was and put the bolt back in. Second, the clutch pedal end of the cable could have broken and third, the transmission end could have broken. In either case, stick your finger into the hole the clutch cable is sticking out of and find the clutch cable tube. When you do, pull the old cable completely out. Grease the new one and work it into the clutch cable tube. When it's almost all the way in, put it on the hook and put the pedals back in place. Crawl under the car. Put the end of the cable through the clutch arm on the transmission, then screw on one of the two nuts - the other is a jam nut. Get someone to push the clutch pedal down 1/2" with their hand, and run the nut all the way up to the clutch arm, then put on the jam nut. Set the car on the ground, hook up the accelerator cable and reconnect the battery.
