Prior answers that did not address the question but did enter into a debate have been removed, due to conflicting information.

We get questions from several nations, and laws vary from country to country. In the US, they vary from state to state. It is not possible to give a "one size fits all" answer to this question.

In MOST of the US, there is no procedure nor requirement (despite popular belief) to "register" a firearm with anyone. When a gun is purchased from a dealer, to comply with Federal law, he completes a record of that sale that he maintains at his place of business for 20 years. A very few states may require registration of a handgun- usually with the state police. You will need to let us know what state you are asking about, or simply check with your state police agency.

This does not apply to firearms such as machineguns or bazookas that are stringently regulated under Federal law. It does not address carrying a concealed firearm, which requires licensing of the individual in 47 states.

Debaters may discuss this with me thru my message board.

hear in Canada you fill out a form and send it to the government it is done as part of a gun sale if you owned the gun pre registry you can register it talk to the friendly staff at your local gun store they can walk you trough it they do it everyday

as a side note historically gun registration has ALWAYS lead to confiscation most recently in Australia and the UK and alarmingly right here in Canada mostly handguns that they suddenly deemed illegal so if you are lucky enough to own a unregistered gun leave in that way un registered because it and you is safest that way but in the end the choice is yours

Additional answer: it depends on where you are. In the U.S. there is no mandatory registration nationally for regular firearms. A few states require it, but only a few.

It depends on the State statutes under discussion. Most States don't require registration of a gun and some States will not permit you to register a gun. Contact your local law enforcement agency to determine the regulations in your state.

In the United States (other than a few metro areas) gun registration is not practiced. The best course of action for you would be to contact your local police department and advise them that you have found a gun, they will seize the gun, check it against stolen guns on a national database and put it in their secure storage. In most cases the police departments will have a proforma in place to request the return of the gun after a period of time, in which case you will get it back (assuming that you do not have a history of crime or family violence).

It may sound like a long process, but you do not want to be in possession of a stolen gun. Nor do you want to be in possession of a gun that has been used in a crime.

It depends on where you are. In the majority of U.S. states, there is no such thing as registration. In the few states that do have registration, you generally have to go through a local gun shop or through the local police or sheriff's office.

You would have to wait until their actually is a gun registration before this question could even be relevant in any way. As with most states, Iowa doesn't require registration of ordinary Title I firearms.

You don't. In the state of Arkansas, as well as most U.S. states, there is no such thing as registration.
