Don't know if this applies to the Freestar, but worth trying...
With the liftgate open, remove any screws at the top of the taillight lens.
These lenses are also held in place with a 'friction clip' or two - pull the top of the lens away from the vehicle at an angle. It might require some effort, but I'm confident that's all that will be holding the lens in place.
You can change the light bulb by this method.
Which bulb are you speaking of? The in-dash indicater or your outside turn signal?
