also you may have to disconnect the Power Steering return line.so you can jack it up higher. PS don't be afraid to jack the engine way high.it will go just watch the fan shroud and p.s return hose.

there is no gasket on the exhaust manifold. i have a 93 escort lx wagon and i have a leak somewhere and i looked at the exhaust diagram at my local napa and it doesnt show a gasket. * Not sure which diagram you were looking at but there is DEFINITELY a gasket... Look up exhaust manifold on any popular car site and you will clearly see one.
Its on the drivers side of the motor behind the exhaust manifold. Take the manifold cover off and you will be able to see it between the 3rd and 4th exhaust pipes on the side of the motor.
you will have to unbolt the exhaust pipe from the manifold pipe and then you unbolt the manifold pipe from the engine, remove old gasket and make sure both sides are clean of the old gasket and then install new gasket and bolt manifold back onto engine.
