2.4L 4cyl in Grand Am uses direct coil ignition that covers the plugs on top of the engine. There are no wires to replace. Unless the plug boots are damage, you only need to apply the dialectic grease to prevent from sticking to the plugs.
You might have switched the plug wires. Meaning that you put a plug wire in the wrong spark plug which messes with the firing order.
On the 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis , it has the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils on the 4.6 liter SOHC , V8 engine ( it's not the same , as say , a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis that had ( 2 ) coil packs with four towers on each coil pack and spark plug wires with the Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ( EDIS )
You should have C.O.P. ( coil on plug) there are no wires.
Remove the spark plug wire from your 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. Remove the spark plug with a 5/8 deep well socket, white turning it to the left. Reverse the process to put in the new spark plug.
Change your spark plug wires & maybe your dist. cap
follow the plug wires
probably moisture getting into the distributor or bad plug wires. change cap and wires.
If you've already replaced the spark plug wires, try removing the spark plug boot heat shield.
