Next to the headlight under the hood, there is a lever with a little button next to it. Press down the button and pull the lever toward the headlight. This is difficult to do, and you will feel like you are going to break something. After pushing the lever completely toward the headlight, the headlight will pop out the front of the car.
Take the lid off the very back of the headlight; it is attached by a plastic lip that will come off fairly easily by pressing down on the tab that comes off the lip. You will now see the bulbs; the one closest to the top is the main headlight (the one further down is the bright). Push the little wire off of the post, and you will release the bulb. Then you can change it.
I swear Volkswagen makes things difficult on purpose.
Just a little added information on the 2001 Beetle passanger headlight replacement. Don't give up! Because I live in the Northeast and it has been four years and never replaced this bulb, things were very dirty. I had to continually move the slide lock back aqn forth until I was able to get it in the complete unlock position. Although it took me about 10 minutes to do this after reading this article. It saved me $85.00 by doing it myself. I am amazed that VW would charge more than $90.00 to replace a $5.50 part.
Thank You for all the help.
Also - I've been helped greatly in this process by using a bit of WD-40 on the lever/slide mechanism. I'm with Bob in saying, "don't give up!"

How do I change headlamp on 2006 Lincoln Town Car
To change a headlamp on an MK 3 Vauxhall Astra 1992 model, open the hood and locate the back of the headlamp to be replaced. Twist the headlamp off and replace with new.Ê
Remove the wiring harness from the back of your 1999 Chevy Astro headlamp. Remove the headlamp retaining bolts. The headlamp will come out. Reverse the process to install the new headlamp.
it is the relay, change it, it is the hazard button, the one with the red triangle.
very carefully !! Read your owners manual and do it very carefully -those bulbs are VERY very cheap if broken !!
There is a white plastic box located under the passenger side headlamp (useful !!). The fuse can be found there. You will need to remove the front grill and the headlamp has three bolts securing it and not 2 as I found out the hard way. The first 2 are located in clear view on top of the headlamp. The third is hidden underneath. I did not work out how to get to it as I didn't know it was there and broke the bracket wiggling the headlamp. Hope this helps.
First, check the fuse box to be sure the fuses that run the headlamp aren't burned out. That happens. There is a silver trim ring around the headlamp. It's held on with one screw at the bottom; undo the screw and remove the ring. The lamp itself is held on with a retaining ring. It has four screws in it. Two hold it in, two are adjusting screws. Undo the two retaining screws and take off the ring. The headlamp will then fall out. Unplug the connector on the back, plug in a new headlamp, and..."installation is the reverse of removal."
I'm trying to change the headlamp and I'm having difficulty myself too! Very good question!
With the hood open remove the (2) two headlamp assembly bolts from the upper fascia support. Slide the headlamp assembly outward enough to release the headlamp bracket tabs from the slots in the upper fascia support. (to release the tabs from the slots on the passenger side lens move the assembly to the left when facing the engine, and when doing the drivers side lens shift the assembly to the right ) Position the headlamp assembly away from the vehicle body to access the electrical connector. Disconnect the electrical connector from the headlamp assembly. Remove the headlamp assembly from the vehicle. If you wish to change the halogen bulb: Disconnect the electrical connector from the headlamp bulb/socket. Remove the headlamp bulb/socket retainer ring from the headlamp, by turning counterclockwise. Remove the headlamp bulb/socket from the headlamp assembly. . "G" These instructions are similar from around '96 to '03 grand prix model years all trim levels.
There are plastic clips that rotate on rear part of headlight under hood that release the assy then the whole thing slides forward out the front of car.
