This job must be done from the inside. Remove the glove box door, remove the blower and wire harness, remove all the little screws that hold the heater box, now from the engine compartment, drain the antifreeze from the rad, you don't have to drain it completely, remove the 2 heater hoses that go to the heater core, check for 1 or 2 small screws also on this side, back to the inside, remove the cable for the heater control on the box, now you are ready to remove the heater box, and the core is hiding in there. All in all, you have your next couple of hours planned. When you have the job done all the parts back in place, ready to start the engine, just add about half of the antifreeze that you took out, let the engine build up to operating temp. with the heater open, and this will let all the air out of the lines. As the thermostate opens and the fluid circulates, start to top up the rad. Good luck.
where The top radiator hose connects onto the engine , you can see that there are 2 bolts holding that metal round piece there . Take those two bolts off and there is your thermostat.

Look under the front of the car. Its on the bottom of the engine.
The 1994 Mercury Topaz has a chain and not a belt.
Since you had to unplug the wire connector, there is most likely damage to the connector. Check it carefully.
where is the thermostat
follow the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing
Follow top rad. hose. It's in that housing.
Just follow the top rad hose. It's in the housing.
the thermostat is underneath the manifold, follow the top radiator hose and unbolt the manifold. fairly simple.
If you fallow the rad hose off the top of rad there will be a body that the hose is clamped on to at the motor it will be under there

what is the engine?
Find it in the fuel line. I don't think it requires any special tools.
The fuse block should be located to the left of the steering column, under the dash. Depending on which Mercury GS you have (sable, topaz, etc.) it should be a relay located in the fuse block.
Located in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
