Why would a 1999 Mercury Tracer AC blow cool air for about a minute and then stop cooling?

First guess would be low on refrigerant, causing the compressor to quit running after a short period. Could also be a buildup of pressure in the system, causing the system to shut down. Also possible that the fan clutch or some assembly on the compressor only works for a short period. . .

You replaced the blower motor on 97 Mercury Tracer and it still doesn't come on What should you try next?

Was the blower motor defective, or where you just guessing. Did you apply 12 volts to the old motor to see if it was bad? Did you check the Fuse. It may be a defective blower motor resistor pack which is a common problem on this car.

Why would a Mercury Tracer have a rattle when accelerating when the engine is warm?

My '93 Tracer Did the same thing at about 150K miles. Check the heat shield to see if it has come loose. I just removed mine completely because it had fractured and would have to be welded back in place.

AnswerIt's probably a motor mount. I had a bad shake in any gear if I gave it any gas at all and it ended up being the most visible and easy to replace mount, hanging off the cam gear end of the motor. (passenger side, up top, little round thing that's holding the motor to the car.) The mount was less than 30dollars new, easy repair.

How do you replace a fuel sending unit on a 1997 Mercury Tracer Trio Sport?

you have to remove the rear seat. from there there is a rubber mat pull that back and it should all be right there.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the rear seat cushion and unplug the electrical connector from the fuel pump.
  4. Unfasten and remove the four pump cover screws and the ground strap.
  5. Unfasten the fuel tube clips and disconnect the tubes from the pump.
  6. Use a fuel pump locking ring removal tool or a brass drift and a hammer to unfasten the pump locking retaining ring.
  7. Remove the fuel pump and gasket from the tank.

What is the timing on a 97 Mercury Tracer with a split port induction 2000 engine?

There is no ignition timing on the Tracer it is computer controlled. If you mean to ask how to time the engine when installing a timing belt, there is a pointer in one of the holes in the camshaft gear that should point to a dot in the cylinder head behind the gear (straight up). There is a small tab on the crankshaft gear when the pulley is removed that points straight up to a notch in ridge just above that gear.

How do you replace the instrument panel lights on a 1993 Mercury Tracer?

I just did this job on a 1992 Tracer, there probably haven't been too many changes over one model year.

First, take out the four 12mm bolts that hold the steering column up, let the steering wheel drop down into your lap. Take out the trim panel screws for the panel around the instrument cluster (you'll need a Torx bit). Disconnect any electrical connectors from that trim panel (I had two), and remove the panel. The instrument panel is held in with 4 Torx screws, same size as the trim panel. Next, disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission. The connector is between the engine and the firewall, and is held in with a metal clip. Pull the speedo cable through the firewall, and the instrument cluster will push right out of the dash. Don't pull too far, you just need a little space to reach the light bulbs.

How do you release the serpentine belt located on a Mercury Tracer?

There is a tensioner located towards the front of the engine. You'll need a fairly long handle ratchet, a breaker bar preferred. In any event you'll have to determine what on your model has to grab a hold of, release the tension and slide the belt off of which ever pulley is close. Then relaese the tension SLOWLY!!! there is a lot of tension on it and it could snap out of your hand. then reverse the process only retract the tensioner at the end when your ready to put the belt on your last pulley.

How do you get the brake light lens cover off a '98 Mercury Tracer?

I have a 95, which is obviously a different body type... but on mine you have to remove the plastic trim along the inside of the trunk behind the brake light assemblies. From there you can remove the plastic clips that hold various parts of it on.

How do you repair the automatic seat belt on a 1995 Mercury Tracer?

I've gotten closer to answering this question myself. The automatic seat belts were not moving at all. I checked the fuse under the dash, replaced it, and they now work. The problem is, the driver-side belt clip gets stuck halfway upon returning to the upright position. It seems a previous owner didn't know about the fuse problem, and tried jarring it back themselves. Is there a track loose, or could something be lodged in the way of the belt clip?

Where is the starter on a 1993 Plymouth Voyager and how do you change it?

Lift the front of your car. It's under engine near transmission on drivers side. disconnect your battery. then disconnect 3 wires from starter. then unscrew 3 bolts those hold starter. remove starter, insert a new one and do as above in oposite way. __________________________________________________________________________ The Starter is in the front of the motor, right next to the oil pan. If you follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will take you right to the starter. The starter is a direct drive starter and is very easy to change. be sure to disconnect the positive battery connector from the battery before you begin the removal of the starter. your bottom radiator hose may block you from lowering the starter, just move the hose and tug, it will come out. Good Luck and it should take about 90 minutes to R+R the starter.

Where is the fuel pump relay on a 1993 Mercury Topaz?

look in the gas tank ;-) Specifically, I don't know. Generally, it will be under the dash, often combined with a fuse block that has relays on it; in the engine compartment also in a relay block that may be under a plastic cover; sometimes it is plugged into a pigtail on an electrical harness by itself under the dash or in the engine compartment. You will need the exact service manual for this location or someone who is familiar with your exact vehicle model. As you can see there is no set location by manufacturer or carline or model. My 93' Topaz had it attached behind the steering column with a plastic bolt of some sort. It required taking off the plastic panel below the steering wheel, then the metal one behind that. The metal one had 4 bolts, two plainly visible on the bottom, and two under cover plates on either side of the steering wheel. From there, the relay was quite a ways up and behind the wheel, and required breaking the afore-mentioned plastic bolt to get it loose.

What causes a 1999 Cougar with a V6 engine to cut off briefly while cruising then turn itself back on a few seconds later?

Same problem, you need a new alternator. Period. Some will try to say it's other stuff, but you will just spend a fortune till you get a new alternator.See if your lights pulse at night, if they do and they will you need one.If you have a friend who knows cars or you think you are good at changing parts do it yourself. It is a 3 hour job. Or the dealer will do it for about $ 450.00So see if you can do it. $ 210.00 for a new alternator.Steve

AnswerHow fast were you cruising and what is the rpm's when the car shuts off and then back on? these cars have a rev limantor wich at a certain rpm will shut down until the rpm's come back into range. if you are talking 90 mph or faster that is what is causeing your problems.IT'S A SAFTEY FEATURE!!!! Answerthe alternator guy may be right, but it could also be a vacuum leak, depending on when it shuts off, if it is shuddering on idle then i'd say vacuum*not a mechanic* AnswerThere are a few other things that can cause this...

Assuming you may have left out some details... If the car runs fine otherwise; smooth idle, smooth acceleration, etc: two possibilities that are common -

1. Computer is failing, fuel mileage will not be what it once was (by several MPG) and eventually it will not restart even with you turning the key.

2. Timing control module failing, no other symptoms... same end result as above: it will get worse till it fails completely.

Although there are other possibilities, these are the most common in ford powered vehichles.

Good luck

If a 1990 Mercury Tracer stopped running when the Fuel Cut Off warning light came on what does this mean?

- Look for / smell for- RAW gasoline spraying/leaking. check your fuel injectors if any are leaking, if there is any fuel leaking it must be repaired prior to resetting the button in the trunk located on top of the passenger side strut tower, theres a hole, in that hole theres a button, it might need to be pulled back up if it feels as if it has already been depressed, put your finger on the side of the button and pull it up, then push it down and start the car, this will ONLY work if the fuel leak, be it a faulty injector, a line that is leaking etc... has been repaired, otherwise it will do no goid pressing the fuel cutoff reset switch, it will only trip the sensor again.Ford was concerned about electric fuel pumps running with ruptured lines after a collision. Tracers/Escorts were equiped with sensors to detect collisions and shut off power to fuel pump. Owner's manual notes that even bumps in a parking lot might be enough to trip sensor if force was applied in appropiate direction. Reset button is located in trunk over right side wheel well. There is a small hole, insert finger and push down to reset. I have seen this problem confound seasoned mechanics since the sensor can sometimes be tripped just by setting the vehicle down hard from a lift!

What the fuel cut off means is - Fuel WILL NOT BE SPRAYING IF THE FUEL CUTOFF LIGHT IS LIT ! Ignore trying to start it over and over aslong as the cutoff light is lit, it will nlt drain your battery. heres some more good information to know what to look for, and where to start- if your Tracer is (Dirrect Injection) fuel Injected, it will have 1 injector per cylinder, located on the top of the engine back side, under the intake manifold, they are in a row going left to right and angled/slanted down and forward on top of the injectors connected to them is the fuel rail, it can be removed easily, 2 bolts hold the entire rail and all injectors inplace, one bolt on the right and the other on the left. If your tracer has TBI is Throttle Body Injection, it will almost look like a carburetor, but it will have 1 or 2 fuel injectors visible after removing the air filter.

If your engine is marked 'use 5W30 oil only' could using 10W40 cause any engine problems?

5W30 is a viscosity rating, In simple terms resistance to flow. 10W40 is a thicker oil in extreem winter climate you could experience hard stating. If you use a synthetic or partially sythetic oil you will be better off.

i tried it in my 95 Monte Carlo 99,000 miles.it triggered service engine light to come on.going tomorrow to put 5w30 back in it.

In newer model vehicles it is important to use the correct viscosity oil because the engine has been made to properly flow oil of a specified weight. I've seen heavier oil put in new vehicles by ignorrant techs. and the oil can not make its way to lubricate the valves and wears a good motor fast. If you hear ticking noises you better change with new oil qiuckly and hopes the motor runs smooth again.
