How do you replace the EGR Valve on a 2001 Ford Escape?

Yes, clean the cabor buildup from the EGR valve and that pipe.
Diagnostics
You also need to clean the "passages". EGR valve puts exhaust gas back into the engine intake under less than full power situations. When that happens exhaust deposits build up on the walls of the passages. Replacing the EGR valve was only half the repair, you also need to clean it out. There is a tube from under the EGR valve to the exhaust manifold. That is probably blocked.
its on top of the engine,in the back right corner.
Catalytic converter plugged?
About $60 for the part. Labor depends on your location
2001 Ford Escape EGR locationThe 2001 Ford Escape EGR is located on the "top" of the engine slightly back toward the firewall. The right side connects to a tube from the exhaust manifold. The left side connects to the intake manifold. It is further recognizable by the vacuum tube (about 1/4" o.d) that goes from the EGR to the EVS (exhaust vacuum solinoid). IMHO, very accessable. Good luck It looks like a black flying saucer with a small 1/4 inch hose coming from the top of it.
You have to remove the egr tube, vacuum source and two bolts. the tube can be quite difficult. Generally the DPFE sensor on Fords is the cause of an EGR problem though.
Clean it or replace it. Answer by Tigercadd: The 4 cylinder engine has no EGR valve and the V-6 rarely fails. If you're getting an EGR flow overspeed or underspeed code, you simply need to clean the EGR passages at the back of your throttle body. You can have a shop do it for $100 or simply get a TB gasket and do it yourself. Once you remove the TB and gasket you will understand what to do. Put a sheet of common aluminum foil under the TB to catch all the chunky crud. You don't need that dropping onto your transmission case.
the egr valve is not moving enough to send the proper voltage signal to the computer because of a clogged vac passage under the throttle body take the throttle body off and clean the passages, erase the cod es and test drive the vehicle
