Check under both front seats for a yellow wire. The airbag wire can become severed over time.
Mechanics will try to charge you up to $1000 to fix this. You will be able to fix this yourself if you are able to reattach the wire. At the very least, you can tell your mechanic that you found the severed wire and save yourself some serious money.

I have had the same problem with my 2000 Beetle. The only way to reset is to have the dealer do it. so far they have replaces the wiring harness in the drivers seat for the side airbags and several other components under the drivers seat. It seems to be a problem only when the seat is moved. One mechanic says the seat is moved too much( that is crazy i think) I realize it sounds a bit nuts but i have been dealing with the airbag light in and out of the dealer since I purchased it in 2003. Good luck with that one. If the light is on it will not pass a safety for resale. I would suggest trade it in you will get no where with Volkswagen.
