get another dog

I was told because to do this: my problem was, I have a female pug who loves my daughter so much that if she is not around she will not eat sleep go to the bathroom. She will sit on top of the sofa watching the door until she comes home. And then when my daughter comes home she makes herself so sick and wants to be the center of her attention. The vet told me when my daughter comes home she should not pay any attention to her for an 1 hr and then love on her after that. Getting another pet, I did!!!!! I bought another pug and a sheppard plus a cat. When my daughter is in the room there is noone in her sight only my daughter. Its amazing these pets, they ask for nothing only to be fed and taken out and only to be loved..

Let me add:

Getting another pet is not always the best thing to do. You may end up with double trouble!

This will take some time and you will see improvement daily.

First spend the time to walk the pet and play, everyday. Now spend time out in the yard, read, sun bathe, garden, what ever.. if and when the dog starts barking (start with the barking first) Go inside and command no. Quiet! command not beg.or plead.

Then return outside. when I have one that refuses to learn quiet, i use bitter apple in the mouth(JUST A VERY LITTLE) as i command quiet. This usually is one or two times.

You will want to go in and out often, at first every three to five minutes.DO NOT talk to the dog or pet it! As the dog sees you are coming back and you are in and out , it will get bored and settle down. Stop now... Do this again the next day. As this improves, walk down the road and you will see the change is good.

For the dog who wants to eat everything because you are away:

Give this dog a HARD (not raw Hyde) bone, it is hollow and you add velveta cheese to it. Then go out: Follow the steps above.

Note: When you are leaving, DO NOT talk to the dog,,, act like you do when you take the trash out, simply go... Many over stimulate the dog then leave. This is very upsetting to them and they become destructive.

First, learn to show no emotion when you leave or return. Make no tearful good byes nor joyful returns. Make your coming and going and unremarkable event. That means that for at least 5 minutes after you return home you ignore your dog and take care of other things that need doing. When the time is up, greet your dog calmly with quiet, slow petting. Practice leaving and returning. Step out, count to ten, and return. Remember to practice the return skills described above. Repeat many times throughout the day. What we want the dog to learn is that when you leave, you will also return. Slowly increase the amount of time you are gone. Make your dog comfortable while you are gone. Give her something pleasant to do to pass the time. Many dogs enjoy a toy filled with food, such as a stuffed kong. Some would prefer a comfy bed or to have the radio left on. Consider using a Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) dispenser to make your dog comfortable while you are gone. DAP products are available from your local pet store and over the internet. An hour before you leave, take your dog for a good, long walk. Exercise can relax them and they will be too tired to care and sleep most of the day.

Very carefully, as an anxious dog is more likely to bite anyone approaching it. There are several injectable sedatives that can be given into any large muscle and your veterinarian will choose one of these based upon your dog's medical history. Your veterinarian or a trained veterinary technician will administer the sedation and you should not try to restrain your dog while this is done for your own safety. Once the sedation is injected, your dog will be left alone to allow the sedation to take effect.

Dogs do get anxiety -- but it's more a training issue with which any experienced trainer can help you resolve, you don't have to drug them. Usually it's more like separation anxiety from the owner. If it manifests as a fear of something encountered on a walk, it's REALLY a training issue.

Find an experienced trainer, they'll usually evaluate the dog for nothing or a small fee.

----------

If it's related to traveling (I've two right now that act anxious as all get out, but it's really an issue with motion sickness. Dramamine with breakfast before they start traveling or the most effective is Bonine ® (probably the best pill form, over the counter) that I've found. With Bonine, dose 'em by weight the evening before then again with breakfast. I usually use Dramamine and they get a bit drowsy after breakfast: they'll take a brief nap then are fine for extended trips of 12-16 hours.

If you know how to give a dog a pill, that's great, if not feed it to them crushed on something they really like, (my big bad working German Shepherds like junk food) so splitting a sausage and egg mic-muffin is perfect -- buy it the day before, stick it in the fridge and add half to their breakfast with the crushed pill, but do so about 1/2 to an hour before.

There are many things you can do to help with dog separation anxiety. You might not totally cure it though can still do plenty to help your dog.

Different dogs reacted better to different approaches you may find a fair bit of trial and error involved plus plenty of patience.

Perhaps one of the first things to try is not to make a fuss of the dog when you leave home and arrive back. Helps to de-sensitise him (or her) to your departures and arrivals and see it as no big deal when you do have to leave for a bit.

Start with very short times (a minute or two) and gradually build it up.

A couple of things in particular which have helped my dog are me making sure he has his favourite toys to play with - and a treat hidden in one of them - and leaving the radio on for him. A bored dog is more likely to become destructive or bark just for something to do so by giving him stuff to play with it helps to keep him entertained and his mind off other things.

There are other approaches you can try too - experiment until you find something that works for your dog.

What is separation anxiety disorder?

well, separation anxiety is when somebody loves you so much that when they are without you (even only for a little bit) they panic. It usually happens to rescue dogs. As they have been passed on, they have lost a lot of owners so they love you for rescuing them and they get very attached to you. It happened to my dog. He chewed the house to pieces when we went out! He even once managed to poen the window and let himself out into the street. The handle on the window has been broken ever since. If you have a dog who has very bad separation anxiety, see a dog physiologist. That's what I had to do.
