In order to turn off the "Check Engine Light", you or a trusted mechanic check the Onboard Diagnostics (OBDII) OBDII uses a "code reader" which plugs into your car (usually in the dashboard, or near the radio...) and that tells you what "malfunction" is setting your Check Engine Light off.
Basically, if there is a fault in any computer controlled system (fuel, ignition, SRS (airbag), emissions etc) the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) sends a code to the OBD unit... Then the code reader breaks down the fault, it's location and usually (with a good reference manual) you can remedy the problem (or at least narrow it down!)

A quick way to reset the check engine light would be to disconnect the battery for a short while
If the problem has been fixed and the light remains on you need to disconnect the battery and then reconnect it. That should reset the check engine light.
Disconnect battery and leave for about 10 min. Then reconnect. The check engine light went away on mine.
Disconnect the negative battery cable for about two minutes and that should reset your check engine light.
Disconnect the Battery for 5 minutes
You have to disconnect the battery for couple minutes.
To reset a check engine light for a Highlander 2003, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. After this time, reconnect the cables.
