I am going to try to be thorough so I answer your question, number one cylinder is the one on the driver's side of the engine closest to the radiator. The Balancer has timing marks on it that will tell you when number one piston is at the top of it's stroke but each time it comes up it is either on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke and number four which also will be at the top will be on the opposite stroke of number one. You can findout what stroke it is on by pulling the spark plug on number one and cover the hole with your finger until you feel compression, or remove the driver's side valve cover and watch the valves on number one and make sure they are both closed when the timing marks are lined up and that is where the spark should occur on number one spark plug. I hope that somewhere I got around to answering your question.
harmonic balancer
It is located on the harmonic balancer.
on the harmonic balancer.
The timing mark on all 305 to 400 small block Chevrolet engines from 73 to 87 is on the hamonic balancer which is the pulley behind the crankshaft and has no belt grooves...smooth with a split line on it....that line is the timing mark.
This is a good question. Yes, the keyway, is accurate. What is not, is the balancer. After 74, the balancer keyway is offset, from the timing mark. Any harmonic balancer you use, look to see where the keyway is, compared to the hash mark on it. Make sure they line up.
It is possible that the harmonic balancer has spun.check the rubber around the balancer for cracks or decay. If so replace balancer...
there will be a timing mark on the harmonic balancer. and a timing tab on the timing chain cover. point your timing light at the timing tab and you should see the timing mark on balancer. if not timing is way out.markstang.
The timing mark is one the Harmonic balancer and the pointer is attached to the timing cover. Roll the motor over to the timing mark, the be sure and mark the number one plug {marked on the intake manifold} the position of the rotor pointer on the distributer.
Some people mistakenly change the harmonic balancer or the timing cover, without matching it up. Some had a timing mark located at the top center of the timing cover, and some were off to the side (between 1 and 2 o'clock) If you have a mismatched balancer & timing cover, you will not be able to line up the marks. Sometimes the rubber goes bad, and the outer ring of the balancer slips... which would cause the timing mark to move.
on the hermonic balancer
on the timing cover above the harmonic balancer leon
That would be the biggest and widest mark. Are the first mark on it when turning it clockwise to the pointer.
