The timing mark on all 305 to 400 small block Chevrolet engines from 73 to 87 is on the hamonic balancer which is the pulley behind the crankshaft and has no belt grooves...smooth with a split line on it....that line is the timing mark.
On the front of the timing chain cover, drivers side towards the top of the harmonic balancer.
what are the timing marks on a chev 305 motor for the year 1995.
if you look behind the water pump straight down u can see the timing marks.
they are behind the water pump looking strait down from the top of the engine
It could be your off a tooth with your distributor
If you will look stright down behind the water pump, you will see the timing tab.
looking down from (ONTOP) of the engine they are behind the water pump
The only thing I can think of is that the timing tab on your engine has been removed. The hash mark should still be on the balancer, but may be obscured by dirt, grease, or accessories. You might be able to get a new timing tab from an auto parts store or dealer. Some professional quality timing lights have a timing readout, which would eliminate the need for direct reading.
how to adjust the timing chain on a 1988 kz 305
That would be an LE9 engine. Those were rated at 210 horsepower and 250 lbs/ft. of torque at 2000 RPMs.
There is a mark on the timing chain cover behind the harmonic balancer(behind the crank pulley). The harmonic balancer also has a slot cut in it so that you can line the crank up with the mark on the timing cover. The mark on the timing cover should sit at the 2 o'clock position or the 12 o'clock position. My 96 Chevy 305 is at the 2 o'clock position.
There is no timing belt on a 305 unless it is an aftermarket belt drive system.
