My daughter has replaced all the interior door handles on her 1998 Chevy Prism. We purchased new handles from a local dealer and she was able to install them herself by carefully removing the handle and reversing the process to install the new unit. However, she needs to replace an exterior door handle and we can't figure out how to start with this one.
I bought one from Ebay and uninstalled the previous one by removing the screw at the center, sliding the whole thing towards the steering wheel, prying it out a bit (at the side farthest from the steering wheel), popping out the "wire" that pulls the door opening mechanism from the plastic clip, and then prying the whole thing all the way. The wire is L shaped and goes through the yellow part (or white) first then continues to where the yellow parts meets the rest of the handle. To install, first pop the wire in, then push the whole thing in, then slide it back away from the steering wheel. Screw it in to secure.
how do you install spring on interior door handle of a 98 chevy pickup
It is not too hard. You will have to remove the door panel, then you will see how the interior handle is riveted to the metal door frame work. You will need to drill these rivets out and install the new handle with either rivets or screws.

Most auto supply stores can help you with a list of the fuses you need. If not, a Chevy dealer will. == == == == == == The fuse box can be pulled down, there is a handle at the back of it, pull forward and down, fuses are marked for what they are.
There should be two bolts on each side of each handle. Get a screw and as carefully as you can unscrew them and tack the handle off.
There is a spring clip on the back of the handle that you have to get off before the handle will pull off, go to the parts store and get the special window crank removal tool to get it off.
Should be able to access after removing interior door panel
Drill it out and when replacing use a screw.
You will need a computer tech tool, available at any Chevy dealer. You cannot do it without it.
Try your local Chevy dealer. If they can't locate one for you, try your local used auto parts wrecking yard.
You can locate a Chevy car dealer using the Chevy Dealer website. The website features a locator feature that displays maps of your area with Chevy dealers pinpointed.
