1. The transmission has to be completely removed from the car first and drained; 2. Secondly pull the torque converter(by hand) until it slides off the input shaft of the transmission. 3. Remove approx. 8-12 bolts that hold the pump cover in place (these bolts are located just behind the torque converter that was removed). **THE PART BELOW MOST LIKELY WILL BE HARD FOR THE UNEXPERIENCED** Note - You should have some transmission knowledge or have extensive mechanical abilities to remove the pump; getting to the oil pump is inside the pump cover which holds parts together inside the transmission. You may want to consider taking the transmission in to replace the pump. If not then continue below. 4. Where the 8-12 pump cover bolts were removed you will find 2 holes (in the pump cover)that have threads in them; put 2 bolts into those holes and using a slide hammer or pry bar, remove the cover by prying against the case/bolt or using the slide hammer. Be careful not to damage the steel or plastic seal rings that come out as a part of the pump/pump cover. 5. In the back center of the pump cover is 4-6 bolts that hold the pump in; remove those and the cover will come off and expose the oil pump. ****Above has answered how to get out the oil pump on a turbo 350 trans**** Note - putting the pump back together requires alignment tools, a new pump cover gasket and o'ring; you should also replace the torque converter bushing and front pump seal. Make sure that the pump housing is good before buying a new oil pump gear. Inspect the inner pump housing for scoring, pits, metal ect. You may want to have the trans shop put these new parts in if you have never done this before. **********Putting the pump/pump cover back into the trans again******** 1. Put the pump cover gasket against the case and align all of the fluid ports and holes. 2. Grease (wheel bearing grease) well all the the steel or plastic seal rings that are on the inner pump snout. Also grease well the outer "o" ring and pump cover od where it goes into the case. Grease also the inner trans parts and case where the pump seals and cover meet. 3. IMPORTANT: DO NOT FORCE THE PUMP COVER DOWN OR YOU MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SEAL RINGS OR PUMP COVER OUTER "O" RING !! Align the pump ports and the case ports, then slide the pump cover housing over the trans input shaft, gently(do not force) tapping it until it seats in the case. You may have to shift(wiggle) or twist the pump cover a little to get it to seat properly. If the cover does not seat properly, remover the pump cover and make sure that the trans parts (hubs, gears ect)are setting in the case correctly. When everything is in place correctly the pump cover will seat completely in the case. 4. Put the 8-12 bolts back in the pump cover and evenly tighten them. 5. Lube the torque converter snout and put the converter back onto the input shaft rotating while pushing it until it fully seats (it is fully seated when it has approx. 1/4 inch between the case and it). The torque converter may take several tries to get it all the way into the trans. The torque converter may be felt as it drops inward 3 times during installation. Note : It is important to seat the torque converter correctly or the trans may not fit back into the car correctly.

A 1996 Chevy should not have a a turbo hydramatic 350 unless it has been changed. it should not shift into reverse hard unless the idle is too high, or there is some other problem,such as a tired differential,or bad u-joint.
