You have to remove the timing cover which is on the front of the engine. To get that off, a lot of things have to be removed or stashed away to one side (radiator, Power Steering pump, distributor, crankshaft pulley, oil pump, oil pan, valve cover...).

Once the cover is removed, you have to replace the two guides for the chain, the chain itself, the sprockets and the hydraulic tensioner.

It's important to clean out the oil galley that feeds the tensioner as it often gets crudded up and restricts oil flow to the tensioner. It's also important to lever the flexible chain guide (passenger side) out to its maximum distance before it's tightened down. Finally, it's important that the crankshaft and camshaft don't turn while everything is off. Check the oil pan for 'pieces' of the chain guides as they may have come apart and are resting in the oil pan.

Installation involves getting a good seal on everything with gasket maker, priming the oil pump before installation and making sure all belts are at the correct tension. The hydraulic lifters may sound awful for 15-20 minutes on first start up while they bleed out air.

Use a good quality oil filter from now on (one with a good drain back valve).

This is a fairly big job. Very labor intensive. Most shops will quote you between 8-10 hours just for the labor.

You just replaced the timing chain in a 1996 Nissan truck 2.4L and you are having trouble setting the timing any suggestions?

There are marks on the chain that coordinate with marks on the timing gear. Make sure these line up when putting on the timing chain, and you should be good to go. Getting to the timing chain is the real battle.
