Well I recently found out. I have a 2002 Jeep liberty and they will make a grinding noises when you turn the steering wheel. The noise is worse when you turn at slow speeds or while in park. The noise will get worse over time. As the driver you'll know something is seriously starting to go wrong because the sound is loud.
It has two universal joints (u-joints) in the driveshaft that powers the rear wheels.
Answeri had that same thing on my explorer, especially in colder months. it was the a ball joint that had busted. basically had no grease and the metal was rubbing against metal making the creaking sound.
Worn ball joints?
most likely bad cv joints or wheel bearings. If the bearing is bad it will produce a loud whining noise the faster you go and if it is a cv joint it will make a clicking sound turning corners or when backing up with the wheels turned.

My guess would be components in the rear brake assembly. My 2003 Liberty kind of makes a creaking sound back there. Depending on the type of sound it might also be something with the exhaust system, which I believe runs down the passenger side.
Depending on where you live and labor costs, the aprox cost for replacing EACH ball joint would be between $225 and $300.
