On the Ford Explorer you pull the hood release inside the vehicle which causes the hood to pop up slightly. Then you reach in through the grill at the front of the Explorer, near the top of the grill just under the hood and slightly left of the center of the grill. Move the secondary catch lever to the right and lift the hood. If the hood won't open, a second person inside pulling on the hood release while the other person operates the secondary catch lever may be necessary if the latch needs to be lubricated.
The easy way to open the hood manually on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier, when the cable is not working is to put the car on a hoist and use a long pole to trip the hood latch. Then lower the vehicle and open the hood the rest of the way. Replace or repair the cable for the hood latch before closing the hood.
