It depends which cable is broken. If the main cable is broken under the truck, the brakes should release on their own. If the brakes dont release, the cables are frozen from rust and need to be replaced. If the release cable from the handle to pedal assemdly is broken reach under the dash above the pedal and find the small release arm. Pull the arm toward you [ the rear of vehicle ] and the emergency brake pedal will
release.
pull the shaft
Fix the emergency brake
If the cable is broken and parking/emergency brake is still ON, then they are rusted in place ! - Your emergency brake system needs urgent work.
?need to replace the cable to a 1979 buick regal, the emergency release mechanism wire broke. Don't know how to release the brake?
I use to have a 440c. Do you mean the emergency brake is stuck ? Like the brake pads are stuck in the lock position on the brake disk on the driveline. Something must be froze up or the cable is broke or way to loose to work the brake.
On most of the emergency brakes the release lever pulls on a cable that pulls on a small lever on the brake mechanism. To release the brake follow the foot pedal up under the dash. You should be able to see where the small cable hooks onto the mechanism. Using a small pry of some type you should be able move the small lever manually that the cable would pull on. That should release the brake. CAUTION. When the brake is released the foot pedal may snap back extremely fast. Make sure you are not in the way and that the vehicle will not roll away with you stuck under the dash, also keep your fingers clear when releasing the brake.
You have to replace the parking brake handle assembly.
This is what I did with my 79 Chevy Malibu when the release handle broke off (the little cable it was attached to broke).I found out that the "cable" that broke off in my hand when I pulled the release, wasn't the actual parking brake cable, it was just the release cable. It is only a few inches long and it does attach to the brake mechanism under the dash but it's not the actual brake cable. So i looked way under the left lower dash to see how the parking brake pedal was connected, and carefully tried a few things to see if i could pull on it and make it disengage. Yes there was a little metal part close to the pedal arm base, that is about 1/2 inch rectangle sticking out to the side. it has a little slit in the center of it, maybe that is where the release cable used to go. So when I pulled back on that little half- inch rectangle, it did release the brake pedal. Then I was able to drive. So if anybody thinks your emergency brake won't work when the release cable breaks off in your hand, that may not be factual. You might still have the parking brake, just need to replace the handle and the little short release cable for the interior of the car. So you can RELEASE the brake in the normal way. But please check it out really well to find out for sure!
One thing you learn when taking driving lessons is how to do an emergency brake.Brake is pronounced the same as break, but has a different meaning.Hit the brake quickly!
Look under the area where the brake lever is and follow the cable to the plate on the side where you will find the broken part of the cable pointing to the tab the cable connects to. Pull the tab upward but be warned your arm will get hit by the parking brake itself as it is released.
most likely a clog in the line or wheel cylinder or maybe a broke spring
stuck parking brake cable, over extended wheel cylinder, or your brake springs broke. check the back of the drum and wheel for fluid(black and wet)wich would be a wheel cylinder. if it occured after using the emergency brake then it is probably the cable otherwise you will have to remove the tire and inspect the brakes
