You dont. You could technically take off the e-clip and put a socket over the top of the spring and hit it with a hammer. this will rapidly compress the spring and push out the 2 retainers and free the spring, but the valve will fall into the cylinder chamber, so youd have to take the head off anyway.
Actually, to do it without taking head off mainly depending on how much room you have you go to the auto parts store and they have a little hose you hook to your compressors air line, it screws down in place of spark plug, before you do that put a screw driver down in the spark plug hole and make sure the piston is at top dead then put your hose in an make sure there is air flow first I had to fix one where they used a hose where the center pin was still in their hose like for filling tires so no air was coming out and soon as retaining clips came off he heard tink, valve was down in engine. Anyways, with the right hose ( you can use a hose from an engine compression checker just again you have to take the little pin out of the center) the valve springs can be taken off without removing heads.
drain coolant then remove thermostat housing remove thermostat replace with new one spring to block

I am assuming you are talking about the thermostat. The spring end faces the block.
Every try block must have a catch block, and vice versa.

Assuming you mean the exhaust and/or intake valves. # Remove the heads # Borrow, rent or buy a valve spring compressor # Use the spring compressor to compress the springs (one at a time of course) # Remove the valve stem "keepers" # Push the valve out through the head.
Spring towards the engine.
Taking guard.
It is not behind it, GM removed 1 drain plug and installed a knock sensor in its place. Just remove sensor. If your lucky it might come out without brakeing. 202 heads are double hump and the regular small block has single hump.
