Go into the trunk on both sides. Several small bolts are mounted on the firewall. Removing the bolts will loosen the tail lens glass.
Remove the carpeting from behind the light assembly by prying loose the plastic fasteners. Then remove all twelve nuts that are exposed (two are recessed out of sight). The entire red glass assembly then comes loose in one piece, and the bulbs just ftwist out.

Pop the hood. Remove the front shroud cover to expose the radiator and light assemblys. Remove the head lamp assembly by removing the vertical light brackets. These brackets are vertical metal holders for the lamp assembly. They are removed by pulling up and there are two per side. You will see them once you remove the front shroud cover which exposed the light assembly's. The light brackets will have hard rubber attached to the top on each one to facilitate their removeall. Once you have removed the brackets, the entire light assembly will slide forward. You will need to guide the wiring so that you can slide the light assembly forward. Once you have the entire assembly slid forward you can remove the light socket from the back of the assembly and change the bulb.
You have to remove the trunk liner from the rear of the car,and then remove the three bolts that hold the taillight into place.
remove the trunk lining or bend it back easy where the brake light is to access it and change it out.
Brake LightInside the trunk, remove rubber gasket from the plastic latch cover. Pull off the latch cover and then pull off carpet lining from the trunk walls. There will be 4 nuts holding the brake light assembly in place, unscrew only the four exposed ones! Neglect the ones inside the holes in the trunk wall, those have nothing to do w/ the brake light assembly. Slowly remove the assembly and twist the defected bulb housing counter-clockwise and pull off the faulty bulb. This procedure for removal is ineffective.. It does not show how the red exterior lense can be remove to expose the light brake socket for removal of the lamp. You cannot twis the bulb assembly and pull in a Lincoln Continental 2000.The access to the light bulb is to remove the exterior lense. Perhaps a refinement on how to will many on how to replace brake lighs.
there are 3 pull tabs on each light housing. lift up and remove all 3 and simply pull out the complete assembly very easy
You have to either unscrew and remove the lens or disengage the bulb and socket assembly from the rear of the lens housing.UpdateThere are two vertical light brackets that hold the entire light assembly in the car. These are removed by pulling up. You can identify them by first opening the hood and removing the radiator cover that also covers the lights. Once you pull up and remove these two holders, the entire light assembly will slide forward. You will need to guide the wiring harness to allow the light assembly to move far enough forward to gain access to the rear of the assembly to change the bulb.
From inside the trunk. The bulbs will plug into the back of the tailight assembly. You may have to move the trunk carpet away to reach it,
You will need to remove the tail light covers in the cargo compartment. Remove the wiring harness. Remove the tail light assembly retaining bolts.
