To install the alternator on a 1996 Nissan Maxima you will have to remove the drive belt first and then the A/C compressor. Do not remove the refrigerant lines because the compressor will only have move down about a few inches for you to get enough room to remove the alternator. The alternator will need to be taken out from the bottom.

unhook the battery, remove the cerpintine belt, remove the wires, remove the bad alternator, put on the new alternator, replace the wires starting w/ the negative one, replace the cerpintine belt, tighten the belt.
To remove ours we had to go underneath and take it out that way. Once we got all the bolts out we had to take off the brackets to get it to drop out. Installation is the reverse of removal. Quite a PITA!!!
First you back off the stud at the top of the alternator, than at the back of the alternator there is an adjuster tensioner bolt has to be loosened, then you need to loosen the power steering pump (3 bolts), then remove power steering belt, then remove alternator belt, then to install new belt do the same except in reverse order.... ON the 99 Cherokee Sport, There are 3 screws at the bottom to remove. Once removed, slide the bottom out to get past the stop tabs.
Loosen the serpentine belt by removing one bolt and loosening the other on the belt tensioner located in the top middle of the belt position. Remove the serpentine belt from the alternator.
