I'm not fully sure about the 86 year/model, but I did have an 86 Corrola and there were 4 screws mounted 2 at the top corners of the faceplate and 2 inside where the ash tray is located. I own a '92 celica and you first have to pull/un-snap the cover around the shifter. Then you remove the 2 screws at the bottom of the coverplate around the radio (it's at the crux of the radio coverplate and the shifter coverplate). Once you remove those 2 screws, the rest snaps out easily.

Begin by removing the decorative cover to your stereo. Remove the stereo retaining screws. Slide the stereo out and remove the wiring harness. Reverse the process to install your new stereo.
The cover surrounding the stereo just clips on, give it a good pull toward you and it will pop off, the stereo will be right there...
You can use a very small screwdriver to remove the stereo and replace it with the new one, or you can purchase special removal tools.
The answer is the same as for a 2004 Tacoma. See the response here:How_do_you_remove_the_factory_radio_on_a_2004_Toyota_Tacoma
Pull up the trim around the shifter. Remove the two screws located directly below the thermal controls. Pull off the thermal control knobs and remove the screws under the left and right knobs. Pull off the trim that extends from the thermal controls all the up to the clock, and lay the trim on the dash. Remove the two bolts above and the two bolts below the stereo using a 5/16" or 8mm socket. Pull the stereo out. From the back of the stereo pull the antenna cable out and remove the two plugs by pressing the latch on the plugs and pull.
