If you have never set up a differentials gear lash and pinion depth don't even try, seek professional assistance or pay someone.

In a nutshell, jack up and support the axle, pull the diff. cover and drain the oil, remove the wheels and brake assemblies to access the axle mounting flange bolts on 1/2 ton models, remove the axles. Some 1/2 ton axes (I can't remember which) you will have to pull the spider and remove the inner axle clips to pull the axles, so if your axles don't come out easy, don't force them. On 3/4 ton models with full floating axles remove the hub caps and remove the 8 axle flange bolts, pull the axles. With the gears exposed you will see 4 large bolt heads that hold the ring gear and spider assembly, these are the carrier bolts. On the left and right you will see a spanner nut that the axles go through, this is how you adjust your ring in and out of your pinion. Again, if you look in hear and have not done anything with a rear end, get help. Count the number of teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. Divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the pinion, if the number comes out even you will need to mark the teeth location to ea. other so they go back together the same, they are a non-hunting assembly and the teeth have matched themselves together. If there is a decimal they are a hunting gear set and can go back together any way. To be safe, mark them anyway if you are unsure. Have something below to set the gear assembly on that will not damage it, i.e. a piece of clean plywood, and remove the carrier bolts and carrier caps, do not use excessive force to pull the gear-set if it is hung up, try rotating the pinion and look for something else holding the set. Your pinion should be clearly visible. Drop the drive shaft and remove the U-joint. Use a yoke holder and remove the yoke nut, use a yoke puller and remove the yoke, reinstall the yoke nut about 7/8 back onto the pinion so you are not striking the threads and use a rubber dead blow to tap the pinion loose, once loose remove the yoke nut and dis-guard (unless yoke nut uses a cotter key to keep placement, never reuse a yoke nut), pull pinion out through the rear, the rear tappered roller bearing will still be on and you will have to use a press and a bearing splitter to remove. There will also be a crush sleeve that will have to be removed and replaced. You can remove the pinion seal and front bearing for inspection.

If you are removing the pinion because you think it is worn, the ring gear is also worn. You can't replace a pinion without replacing the ring gear, they are matched. If you do you will be rebuilding this set again. Get a book, usually MOTOR manuals are really detailed or go to the dealer and ask about in shop manuals. In my area our local library has the MOTOR manuals for check out. Good luck, I will not try to explain how to set up gears, this takes practice and is better left to a Pro. The books however do show you how to disassemble, clean, inspect, reassemble and adjust properly and have detailed pics. of what a properly set up gear pattern looks like.

How do you remove an axle bearing on a 2003 ford crown Victoria?

If you are talking about the rear axle bearing you have to open cover on rearend ( differential) You`ll see a small bolt on pinion gear shaft. Remove it. You mave have to put vehicle in nuetral to turn rearend gears to slide pinion gear shaft out of the way. There are 2 c-clip like things that slide out. This will allow axle`s to slide out of rearend. Now you have to go to auto-zone or wherever and rent a bearing puller to remove bearing from rearend.

How do you remove axle from differential on a 1984 camaro berlinetta?

take back plate off of the rearend pumpkin and there is a horseshoe clip at the end of the axle inside the rearend that has to come out and then the axle will pull out.

How do you change the pinion gears in a gm suburban?

To change the pinion gear in a differential you must first open the differential, drain the gear oil and inspect the gears and bearings. Pinion gears and ring gears are usually done as a matched set so you should plan on replacing both. Remove the axle shafts and then mark the carrier bearing caps so they can be replaced in exactly the same location and direction that they came off. remove the caps and then pull the carrier out. Measure the pinion to axle centerline distance so that you can get the new pinion in the same spot. Remove the yoke retainer nut and the driveshaft yoke and then remove the pinion from the differential housing. You should be using new bearings and races so remove the old races from the differential housing and the old bearing from the Pinion gear. The shims from the old gear should be a good starting place to set up your new pinion depth. Test fit the new pinion to see if the pinion depth is right. Install pinion bearing races, bearings and new seal. Install new ring gear and set the gear lash You may have to shim the carrier or change the pinion depth to get the right gear lash. This process usually requires expert knowledge and specialized tools and you may want to consult a qualified mechanic to do the job. There are many more detailed descriptions on the net.

How do you replace the rear wheel bearings on a 1996 gmc jimmy 4 wheel drive?

-Raise and support the vehicle. -Remove rear wheels and disc brakes or drums . -Drain differential oil. Remove differential cover. -In the differential housing there is an 8mm lock bolt that holds the pinion shaft in place remove that. -Remove the pinion shaft. -Remove the C-lock from the button end of the axle shaft. For that you will have to push in on the axle shaft. It will move freely with the pinion shaft out. The pinion shaft holds the two axle shafts apart. -With the C-lock out you can pull the axle shaft out. - You will need an axle bearing puller to remove the bearing. Pull the bearing and the oil seal out. -Clean everything nice and neat with brake parts cleaner. Wipe with clean towel. -Install new bearing and oil seal. You will need a bearing and race setter. (It helps to freeze the bearing before installation.) -Install the clean axle shaft. -Install C-lock. -Install pinion shaft. -Install pinion shaft lock bolt. Use blue thread locker paste so it doesn't come loose from the vibration. -Remove the remaining of the gasket from the differential and pan. Use a razor blade don't scratch it. -Install gasket and differential cover. -Add the differential oil. -Install brake rotors or drums, tires. If you have any doubts take it to a shop. You have to be really precise.

How do you remove a carrier bearing from a 1988 Suburban?

You have to pull the wheels off, then the brake drums from the rear axle. The axles have to come out to get the rear differential out...if you are trying to replace the ring gear and pinion gear. This is a job that requires a pro. The reinstalling of the new ring and pinion gear must be set exactly right...or it will HOWL..Grind itself up...and fail. Often when this Type job has to be done..it is easier for you to buy a good rear end that comes Drum To Drum from a salvage yard much cheaper...and its easy to unbolt the old rear end...and bolt the other back in...and go on down the road. For me, it has been cheaper everytime. Just be sure to change the rear gear oil yourself...or have the lube shop switch it out ( its Cheap). Be sure you fit the axle breather tube back to the nipple on the rearend. It runs from the axle up above to the frame and the end loops back down in a upside down J . It keeps the water out of the rearend, when you back down the ramp to launch your boat. Water in the rearend is the number one cause of rearend failures. Driving in high water will also do the same.

How do you replace rear differential ring gear and pinion shaft 1980 fiat 124?

You will want to grab a factory service manual or a Haynes manual. Haynes is available new, the factory manual may be available electronically, or via ebay or Fiat sites. The general process is straightforward and includes removing the wheels, brake calipers, brake caliper mounting brackets, rotors, and axle shafts. Remove the nut on the front of the pinion shaft, pull the drive shaft yoke off of the front of the pinion, remove the 8 bolts the retain the rear cover, remove the four bolts that retain the two differential bearing caps, remove the caps. Note any shims used to position the differential carrier. Lift out the differential carrier to reveal the pinion shaft. The ring gear just bolts onto the differential carrier, so replacement is simple enough. The pinion likely must be pressed out from the front toward the back. New shims may be needed, so purchase these ahead of time. Also check and consider replacing the bearings, as well as the front seal and the back cover plate seal. This write up is general / typical, but you will want to follow the service manual instructions.
