An impact wrench is commonly used in cases like this. You can also use a chain wrench in conjunction with a socket & breaker bar.
First remove the old one using a puller that you screw into the harmonic balancer there is a key on it so you can not put the new one on wrong just use the bolt that holds the main pully on to push the balancer on
I tried to change the harmonic balancer of my biuck lesabre 1994, but i can't remove the old one, the bold in the center is very , very tight and i don't know the type of screw, right or left turn.
Remove the big center bolt that holds the harmonic balancer in place. If you have a complete hub puller assembly, it should screw into threaded holes. You'll need to work something out to protect the crankshaft threads when you tighten down the puller, just be aware that you don't want to destroy the crankshaft by messing up the threads. Tighten the puller and it should remove the harmonic balancer for you.
the Knock sensor is located behind the Harmonic balancer pulley. on the bottom sidethe sensor is $95.00 remove the lock down screw unplug and replace
You can tighten ANYTHING too tight. EVERY bolt and screw has a specific torque specification. Look up what the torque specs are for the balancer bolt on your engine and tighten it to the specification.
Remove drive belt. Put jack under oil pan. Remove front motor mount (18mm bolts). Lower jack under engine. Jack up car. Remove front right tire. Remove plastice shields. Rent harmonic balancer puller from auto parts store, free when you return it. Remove bolt for old balancer. Place pin into hole. Hold puller tool while you install three bolts (from puller set) into old balancer. Screw large center bolt into puller to push off the old balancer. Hopefully you have an impact, because it is tight and will take alot of effort. Install: Line up new balancer. Tap lightly with block of wood, just enough until center bolt threads can be started. Use impact to drive it all the way on. Put everything back in reverse order.
remove serpentine belt, turn crank with ratchet to align an open space on sensor which is behind harmonic balancer, disconnect plug on sensor, remove the 2, 13mm bolts and slip it out. put new one in by looking straight down behind harmonic balancer and see that the bands slip through the magnetic sensors without touching, tighten small 8mm screw which sets it in place, around 30 lbs. torque.
1. Remove right front wheel. 2. Remove the cover from the inside fender. 3. Remove the small inspection cover between the engine and transaxle to expose the bottom of the flywheel. Jam a big screwdriver in a tooth of the flywheel and wedge it against the side of the opening and the floor or have an assistant hold it. 4. Use a big ratchet, at least a foot and half long and a cheater pipe another foot and a half to generate the 200+ foot pounds to remove the bolt from the center of the balancer. 5. Use a harmonic balancer puller to remove the balancer. A kit may not have the right size bolts to thread into the two holes in the balancer and you'll have to hunt for the right ones at a hardware store. They may be smaller in diameter than what come with the puller. Good luck. 2. The 3.8 Buick harmonic balancer requires a special puller. But, if you purchase three 4" long, 6mm diameter, 0.1 thread bolts and three heavy duty washers you can use a standard 3 hole puller to remove the balancer. The threaded holes for the 6mm bolts are about 2" inside the access opennings that are located on the face of the balancer. You will need to place the heavy duty washers on the 6mm bolts brfore they are used with the puller. The hex heads on the bolts are to small for the standard type puller and the washers will support the torque required to remove the balancer.
take off the old one with a harmonic ballencer puller you can rent one at the tool rental store, there is a large screw holding the ballancer in place with a keyway, you losen the screw tell its almost off but not all the way and then you attach the puller to the ballencer with two screws then you turn the center screw in until the ballancer pops off ..
I just use the crankshaft bolt to squeeze it back on. Just line up the groove in the harmonic balancer to the key in the crankshaft and slip it on until it's snug. Screw in the crankshaft bolt and tighten it down. The more you tighten, the more it will push the harmonic balancer. Warning! The crankshaft bolt must screw in freely at least five or six turns before you can begin tightening it. If the bolt ain't long enough then you will have to find one the same size, but just a little longer or you could face an unholy nightmare if you strip the bolt out. Use the long one if you have to to get the balancer pushed on a bit. Then, switch back to the original bolt and finish tightening. Good Luck and Good Day!
some wut of an Answeryou take off the center bolt then you rent/buy a harmonic dampener puller/installer and screw the three 3/8 bolts into the harmonic balancers body and pull it off by turning the center stud wich seperates the balancer from the crankshaft. and follow the same steps for re-installation now you are pressing the new balancer on the crank make sure the keyway on the shaft and the pulley are aligned or its gonna cost you a new crankshaft and if you replace the crankshaft might as well re-build the engine. It's obvious that before any thing you have to remove your belt/fanclutch and fan/ fan shrowd or you will not have any room to work.94 grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0berto
After you remove the bolted on belt pulley use a screw driven dampner remover that has "L" shaped clamps. Sometimes called an internal/external puller.
