The 1999 Pontiac sun fire oil sending unit is located in the bottom of the engine. You will need to remove the oil pan in order to view the oil sending unit.

you must remove the front suspention crossmember and suspension.
The oil pump is located inside the oil pan. When you remove the oil pan the pump will be bolted to the engine block inside the oil pan.
This is pretty basic. Raise the car and block carefully. Remove the oil pan drain plug to drain the oil. Remove the bolts holding the pan onto the car. You will probably have to pry the pan away from the engine with a screwdriver or a putty knife. Installation is the reverse, only you will want to thoroughly clean all mating surfaces and replace the pan gasket. You will probably need some gasket sealer. Remember to replace the drain plug and fill with oil FriPilot
Um... I'm wondering why you want to replace the pan. Maybe you hit a rock or something eh? Anyway, it's very direct. Drain the oil, remove all the pan bolts and the pan. Replace the pan and gasket and refill the oil to proper specs. See your parts store for a Haynes or Chilton manual for in depth instructions. FriPilot

U have to remove the subframe from the vehicle.
You will need to drain the oil from your 1997 Pontiac Grand Am oil pan. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Remove the oil pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new oil pump.

you have to remove the front suspension, and the cradle or frame that is bolted and holds the engine in.that is the only way to get to the oil pan.
the sunfire auto trans has no drain plug. You must drop the pan.
