everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and a professional shop manual should be available at the library in the reference section--you can make copies of the necessary information...good luck :) It sounds way to easy to be true, but you just need to pull straight up, it does not twist off. Took me over an hour and a torn up shifter knob to figure that one out.
The shifter knob on a 1995 Chevy Cavalier is thread on. To remove it just spin the knob counter clockwise until it comes off.
remove it
Loosen the Jam nut on the bottom of the know CW and then turn the knob CCW..
Remove the shifter knob. Remove the shifting linkage. Remove the shifter retaining bolt. Reverse the process to install the new shifter.
If its a manual. All you have to do is pull it straight off (gotta pull really hard). But when you do, make sure you don't smack yourself in the face or neck. Been there, done that.
The plastic piece around the bottom of the shifting skirt pops off, turn knob counter clock wise to loosen and remove. Re-install clock wise.
Put the car in neutral and pull straight up, it will pop off.
Try twisting it and then get a manual for it. Try Chiltons or Haynes.
The first cause of the jump out from one to other gear is the loose shifter fork, which connects the shifting linkage and gears of the transmission. The second cause is loose shifting linkage itself, which connects the gear shifting knob and shifting fork. The shifting linkage and shifting fork become loose due to the rapid changing of gears from one gear to other at high speed of vehicle. The third cause is the misalignment of shifting linkage to the shifting fork.
you have to take the plastic cover off. more then likely you'll have to cut it off (thats what i did), then underneath that there's a bolt you'll remove and the shift knob will come off.

The reset knob is located under a rubber grommet near the instrument panel or computer. Simply remove the grommet and use a screwdriver or stick to depress the knob.
