There are four screws under the steering column. Three self tapping screws, and one machine screw. Remove all four. The upper and lower half of the cover are snapped together, and have locating pins to align the two halves. Push the seam of the two cover (along the side of the steering column) while pushing/pulling up on the top cover. Once they pop apart do the other side and remove both covers. When re-assembling, be sure to line up the "pins" from the lower cover to the holes in the upper cover, when snapping it back together. Install the three self tapping screws first, then posistion the covers so the hole for the machine screw lines up with the threads in the lock mechanism, and install the last screw.

Without knowing what car you have I couldn't say for sure but from my experience most cars with the indicator above the steering column it is caused by a broken nylon string that attaches from the indicator and the shift rod. These do not wear out often, most of the time it is caused by inexperienced people dropping the steering column or replacing the column. If it is not detached at the correct time in the sequence when working on a steering column it will definitely break the nylon cable. Addition: If it's a Buick Century or Regal, contact me at ANCTechnologies at hotmail and I can assist you.
