The most common way is to support the engine from above, drop the frame under the engine and trans-axle, remove the transmission and clutch. Replace flywheel and reassemble.
Left rear quarter near the axle.
Pontiac does not make a transmission dipstick, unless the newer ones have them. Actually, the early models did. My '96 had one. Later models did not. The trans fluid is checked via a plug in the side of the trans-axle.
The" manual" trans axle check/fill plug is located on the passenger side of the trans axle. use a box end wrench to remove it.
remove axle hub nut and tie rod to spindle connection. remove sway bar connection to control arm if present. pry/pound/press axle from hub, be careful not to damage threads on axle. Axle should hang loose at this point. Look for any bolts holding axle to trans, but should not be present on this car. Pry on inner part of axle between trans and axle end. Pry hard enough and it will pop out. Pound axle back in from outer end, be careful not to damage the axle and get splines lined up
Don't waste your time taking out the half shaft. Take the few bolts that are holding the rest of the axle and remove the half shaft with the other part of the axle all together. Its a hundred times easier. That's what we did in my 05 RSX type S. when we pulled the trans. out of the car.
