Open door as wide as possible. Place jack stands or other object under door for support. Detach speaker, power window/locks wire. There should be a connector that you can take apart. Pry out spring with pry bar. Remove retaining rings from hinge pin. Carefully tap down on upper pin to remove. Have a friend hold the door up slightly to relieve tension. If pin does not fall out grab with vice grips and tap out. Tap upward on lower pin and follow same directions as with upper. Remove bushings by carefully tapping out. Hopefully you have already purchased a replacement pin set. Take the new bushings for the upper and insert them in the bracket attached to the vehicle. Bushing down on the top part of the bracket and up on the lower part of the top bracket. The second set of bushings goes in the lower bracket attached to the door of the vehicle. Upper bushing down and lower up. Have your buddy hold the door in position and insert the pin in the upper bracket from the bottom. The pin for the lower bracket goes from the top of the lower bracket to the bottom. Attach locking pins and pry spring back in to position. Reattach electrical and speakers. Your done. To add my procedure on my 97 Chevy 1500 pickup, the above procedure is right on the mark. However, because I was doing this myself, I opted to use a padded jack on the bottom of the door and used my engine hoist, rolling down the window and getting a very thick towel and strapped the top of the window frame. This made for a very stable setup. Slide the door back slightly, do the work, 30 minutes done.
you take it to a shop
I would recommend you replace the entire hinge and forget about repairing it. In my experience this is the best route to take.
You replace The hinge pins
I found an excellent web page that walks you through this step by step: http://bodyshopzone.com/archives/mechanical/door/hinge/pin_replace_1.html
To replace the Ford Explorer rear window hinge, you have to buy a similar window hinge. Use a screwdriver to open the hinge and replace the hinge but fitting it in the window.
How do you change the door hinge pins and bushings on a 2002 GMC 1500 pickup truck?"
The hinges are spot welded in 4 places. There are detents on each spot weld for drilling. Use a 1/2 inch bit and drill out the spot welds, then the hinge is supposed to come off. The new hinge should come with bolts and a back plate. I'm in the middle of this right now. With the 2 forward spots, the fender is partially blocking for drilling. I still don't have one of them drilled enough for the hinge to separate. Good luck!
To replace the hinge on a 95 Mercury Cougar, remove the bolts holding the hinge in place. Find a replacement hinge from the manufacturer and install it using the right hardware.
A little grease.
You have to replace the whole hinge assembly, they don't make a hinge pin kit for the Thunderbird.
The wire that needs to be disconnected is located under the glove box, if I remember correctly it's orange in color. It will be tucked along the channel where the hinge screws are.
You can replace the top door hinge with bottom hinges on the 1992 as long as the hinge is for the cab doors. The hinges for the tailgate would not work on the doors.
