I have a 1996 Suburban which is the same body style. On the inside of the door there is a small, somewhat triangular shaped plastic panel that needs to be removed to get to the bolts that hold the mirror in place. With the tips of your fingers on the bottom of the triangular panel, push up (use a lot of force). This should snap the panel off without braking any pieces. Remove the foam piece from the hole and you'll see the wire and three bolts that need to be removed (a flashlight will help here). I used a 10mm socket wrench and open end wrench to get the nuts off of the bolts. Since the bolts are in a tight spot, I used the tools just to loosen the nuts and then took them off by hand. I used a telescopic magnet to ensure I didn't drop the bolts down inside the door as they came off. Disconnect the wire at the harness and the mirror should easily pull out from the outside. When putting the new mirrors on, put a small blob of grease on the nut to hold it in the socket or on your finger when you get it in that tight space.
