How do you replace the upper control arm bushings on a 1999 Ford Expedition?
I have 2000 expedition and thought i could change then. After taking my wheel off i notice they could not be change. You need to replace the upper control arm.
I got a quote for $1300 to replace the bushings on both sides on my 1993 S15. Its very involved to get the control arms off and then the bushings have to be removed and installed with a machine press. It turned out to be cheaper to replace the control arms myself for $250 in parts.

its the upper control arm bolts also called cam's. most of the time you have to replace the cam bolts and the bushings. that's the best idea for you to idea. rangers are pretty well known for junking those upper control arm bushings.
Bushings need to be pressed in (and old ones may possibly need to be pressed out) with a special tool, then alignment is required to prevent premature tire wear.

You have to remove the lower or upper control arm (what bushings are bad), using wrenches and a pickel fork to separate the ball joints. You then take the arm to a hydraulic press and press out the old ones and install the new ones. Reverse assembly.

You have to change the upper control arm.

Lube your sway bar bushings using brake fluid or a silicone. These are many times the cause.

You will need to replace the upper control arm. My research has determined it is not possible to purchase the ball joint seperately. If you do happen to find the ball joint you will have to press the old one out of the control arm which can be a real pain. Use a ball joint press. You can get one from Harbor Freight. You'll most likely need the accessory kit as well. You can use the press in different configuration to press the old bushings out, and the new bushings in. Even the front upper bushings in the axle can be pressed out, although it may be a little tricky setting up the ball joint press to do the job.
Compress the springs and lock them down. You best check on all the front end compomets while you are doing this job.
the bushings on the lower and upper control arms or "links" need to be replaced. This wobble is called the death wobble and is common on all pathfinders.

This is a well-known problem with this generation Pathfinders... the rear upper and lower control arm bushings are worn. Have them replaced and the sway should disappear.

This may be caused by a bent or improperly installed control arm. If the question refers to the rear control arms, the installation procedure requires setting the rear suspension to the correct "design height" (by removing the coil springs and jacking each hub to the correct height using a spacer) before tightening the control arm mounting bolts. This removes undue torsional force from the control arm bushings which can lead to premature failure

u can't just change the upper ball joint, u have to change the whole upper control arm. It is welded to the arm in one piece.

This depends on upper or lower ball joints. If you need to replace the upper ball joints, you must replace the upper control arm. For the lowers, you will need a ball joint press, and some snap ring pliers. Be careful with the spring when taking the spindle apart from the control arms. (spring type suspension) Have to unload the torsion bar (Torsion Bar suspension) You will need a special tool to do this
