You Can Rotate The Engine By Turning The Harmonic Balancer, ( Crankshaft Pully Mounts On It ) By Using A Socket And Extension That Fits The Nut Holding The Balancer On It Will Be Rather Large Maybe 1 &1/2 Inch Or More. You Can (maybe hold the fan belt tight enough & turn the engine this way. Before I Did All This I Would Make Sure Its The Ring Gear & Not The Starter Drive. Good Luck

What does an automobile starter do?

Besides the smart alec answer "start an automobile", a starter has a small gear, that will both extend as well as rotate when the key is turned. This gear will engage teeth on the flywheel/flexplate, which is bolted to the rear of the crankshaft. As the starter turns, the engine will be turned.

What would happen if the flywheel is rotated in reverse direction?

It would still store the same amount of enery ********************************************** That's an interesting question. In order for the flywheel to go in the opposite direction, the helical gear attached to the starter motor would have to rotate in the opposite direction also. As it is designed to engage and move the flywheel in a clockwise motion, I would hazard a guess that you would very shortly be installing a new starter motor with the correct polarity.

What are examples of electromechanical devices?

A car starter motor is a good example of an electromechanical device. When battery current is applied, an electromagnet is charged and overcomes the resistance of a strong spring attached to a lever which forces the starter gear to engage the engine flywheel. The electrical current simultaneously causes the gear to rotate, forcing the flywheel to turn thereby turning over the engine. Another example is the simple doorbell which works on the same principle.

How do i know if when replacing the starter on a 1995 gmc jimmy would i need to also replace the fly wheel.?

the teeth on the flywheel will be missing or damaged when you rotate it around.

How do you turn a 327 engine back to first cylinder?

1) Remove starter or inspection cover for flywheel/ring gear and carefully use screwdriver to rotate engine 2) Use a socket on the crankshaft pulley to rotate engine

Why wont your 1992 Camero Engine rotate when you attempt to start it?

bad battery or cables. Automatic trans not in park. Broken loose connections at the starter or ignition switch. Starter moter pinion jammed in flywheel. Bad starter, or ignition switch. Seized engine.

Starter motor ring gear?

Starter motor ring gear is a large gear cog that fits around the circumference of the flywheel on rear of engine. When the starter motor spins, its 'Bendix' engages this gear to rotate the crankshaft..

What should you do when a new starter spins the relay but does not engage whenever the battery that is OK is connected on a 1994 Ford F-150 6-cylinder with manual transmission?

Sounds Like You Have A Defective Starter, Maybe A Bad Starter Drive. Or Worse Your Flywheel Ring Gear May Be Stripped In The Spot It Has Stopped In. Rotate Your Engine A Few Inches By Hand. Be Sure To Remove Coil Wire. After Doing This Plug Back The Coil Wire. See If It Will Engage. Or You Hear A Grinding Noise. If It Starts Or Rotates, ( Stripped Ring Gear ) If Not Take It Back To Parts House. Have Them Test It. Also Make Sure All The Wires Are On It Correctly, GOOD LUCK

How do you tell when your starter has gone out in 1997 Oldsmobile achieva?

The starter is just one part of the starting circuit that includes the key switch, battery, solenoid, and wiring. If any one of these parts fails, the starter won't activate. If you hear a click from the engine compartment when you turn the key to 'start' then you have a good circuit to the solenoid. The click you hear is the solenoid pushing the starter gear into the flywheel. Normally the starter motor starts turning at the same time to rotate the flywheel, which is connected to the crankshaft. If this is not happening, make sure the battery is fully charged. Check the engine compartment for burned or missing wires between the battery and the starter, or loose connections. If you hear a whirring sound from the engine compartment when you turn the key, it may be the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel and the starter motor is turning. Most modern cars have the starter and solenoid in one unit. Remove the starter and take it to an auto parts store to have it tested. Also check the gear while you have it out. Broken or worn teeth on the gear or flywheel will prevent it from turning the engine. --mark

How do you adjust magneto on 6.5 hp Briggs engine?

The armature needs to be slightly loose with the magnets away from it, insert a business card or index card between flywheel and legs of the armature, slowly rotate the flywheel until magnets pull the legs close, tighten armature rotate flywheel until magnets are away, remove card and you are done.

What does the flywheel do on a 1996 Chevy blazer?

For the engine to start and run, Something has to make it turn / rotate and that is were the fly-wheel comes into play. When you turn the key to the start mode it sends power to the starter and a little gear comes out of the back of the starter and fits into the ring gear on the fly-wheel and that turns the engine over so it will start.

Why would your car start but continue to make a noise like you have just turned the ignition on?

Here are several answers and opinions from FAQ Farmers: * The starter drive is a little gear unit that gets pushed into the flywheel teeth to rotate the engine during starting. Once the engine picks up speed, the flywheel starts turning faster and spins the starter drive backwards back into the starter. Either the starter drive is bad on your car, or the solenoid that pushes the drive forward is bad. Either way, you're looking at buying a new starter. * Assuming from you description that you mean that the starter is staying on after you start the engine. It depends on the configuration of the solenoid and starter. Sometimes the solenoid can be held down if you have a stuck keyswitch or if the solenoid contacts have fused.
