You can set the base timing by ear, But to be able to get the check engine light to go out and to set the timing were it is supose to be requires a engine scanner.

You don't set timing with a light on a 1995 Dodge Ram. You set the distributor to 0 deg with the engine off, and the computer takes over from there. To set dist to 0 you need to remove dist cap, set crank pulley on 0 mark and look down over rotor and line it up with mark in pick up plate in dist.
