How do I get to the crankshaft of a 1991 camero RS
Jack the motor up and take the motor mount loose on the top right side. Carefully lower the motor down until you see the crankshaft bolt on the bottom. Then take the center bolt off the crankshaft and then the pulley will come off.
put the car in drive and crankshaft wont turn anymore. then you can take off the bolt
Remove bolt, and use a harmonic puller to remove pulley.
Use a strap wrench or chain wrench on the pulley to hold it secure.
Desert Storm commenced in January 1991 and ended the next month, in Febuary 1991.
Your will have to loosen up the alternator, and take off the alternator belt from around the crankshaft pulley. To get the crankshaft pulley bolt off, you will have to use in impact wrench on it. Should be on the driver side of the car. Also it is a regular threaded bolt. The torque on it from the factory is around 115lb/ft. You will need a 17mm Impact socket and a good impact wrench. It will not break loose easily if there is rust on it like most that are 20 years old. Even with penetrating oil it will not be an easy job. Use care when working with the crankshaft pulley as it is old and will crack easily as well.
its located on the front passenger side of the car.first take off the tire, then the inner fender and the crankshaft pulley will be right there. its also easier to do with air tools.
Take the serpentine belt off and then take the crankshaft pulley off and you will need a puller to get the balancer off the crank.
it takes a fair length of time on most motors you have to pull the crank pulley and possibly the fan and rad.
there are two different sizes for that year since a split of of months one is a 70mm or a 60mm pulley and one on the bottom 47mm take off timing cover to see and the crankshaft pulley
you just need a puller to take it off, it's not a special puller.
