A sway bar is a solid piece of steel that bolts up to the suspension. Unless it is broken or you crashed it down on a rock (really hard) and bent it, there is not much to go bad with the bar itself. The bar is connected to the suspension via a set of rubber bushings that go around the bar and clamp into a bracket. The bushings look kind of like the capital letter "D" except the hole in the middle is round (goes around the bar) and they are about 2 1/2 inches thick.

The bushings can, over time, deteriorate. You can inspect the bushings for cracking or "chunks" that have fallen out. A new set of bushings should cost you under $50.

When changing a Jeep Cherokee Rear Sway bar link is there spring tension on it that I should be aware of before unbolting it Should the car be on the ground or jacked up off the ground on axle stand?

If the Jeep is setting level there should be no tension on the rear sway bar. Also, it should not matter if the Jeep is on the ground. The sway bars on the Jeep Cherokee simply pass through a bushing and transfer force through leverage from one side to the other. hth
