The first thing you want to do is check and see if you have a points type distributor, or an HEI distributor. If its a points type, you can go purchase points, a condenser, cap, and rotor to start with.. If it's an HEI, just get a cap and rotor.. But, ask yourself one question. WHY are you thinking you need a tune up? Poor gas mileage, lack of power, general drive ability problems? Well, you can change all of the above, as well as your plug wires, spark plugs, fuel filter (s), PCV Valve, Air Filter, etc. etc. And after you do all that, then you need to determine how many miles your vehicle has, and if its over 76,000 miles (if you have a TH-250,350,350c,400, or a 200r4 or 700r4 automatic transmission.) Change your Transmission Fluid and filter, (you'll have to change the pan gasket as well..) You could also check your radiator hoses, coolant level, Power Steering fluid level, brake fluid level, check any vacuum hoses for leaks, check your differential lube level. And you might even want to dive into your carburetor if your fairly handy you'll get by.. Make sure to purchase a quality Maintenance manual before you do anything, it could save you a lot of money.
