What does Obama want to do for the people in America?

Since he became president, there are many things Mr. Obama wants to do, and he has been VERY specific in laying out his plans. Of course, it should be noted that every politician has great plans when running for office, but once they are elected, they have to get their agenda through congress, and that does not always happen. Many critics, including some in his own party, believe he has been too cautious in his first term, while others say that congress is so determined to block everything he proposes that it has kept him from getting more accomplished.

That said, his supporters would say he has accomplished a lot. Here is some of what he wants and what he has tried to do. Mr. Obama wants to keep the country safe, and he has done so. He said if given the chance, he would find and eliminate Osama bin Laden and decimate Al Qaeda. Both have happened. He said he wanted to expand access to health care, and he was able to get the Affordable Care Act passed. He said he wanted to end the war in Iraq, and he kept his promise. He said he wanted to see women receive equal pay for equal work, and he was able to get the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed. He said he wanted to end Don't Ask/Don't Tell, so that gay servicemen and women could serve without lying about their sexuality, and he achieved that. And having inherited a terrible economic crisis from President Bush, he wanted to turn things around and put the American economy on the right path; many economists believe he prevented a recession, and also rescued the auto industry.

But many of the things he wanted to do have not happened. The economic recovery has been very slow, for a number of reasons. His opponents would say he has not reduced the deficit and that his policies have not improved the economy. He wanted to create a less partisan Washington, one where people from both parties would work together-- that too has not happened and in fact, some would say things have gotten worse. His opponents are still convinced he is a socialist or that he does not have America's best interests at heart, and not much has changed regarding their opinion of him and his policies. Mr. Obama has also wanted to work on some foreign policy issues, such as the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, but so far, the Israeli-Palestinian divide is as wide as ever. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to achieve more of his goals in his second term, as it is certain that he wants to be remembered as a president who got things done for the American people.

During his first term, he gave two tax cuts that mainly affected middle class Americans and small-business owners. In his second term, he wants to keep the Bush Tax Cuts for 98% of Americans, but allow the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans (the top 2%) to expire, as he feels they can afford to pay a little bit more.
