The five pillars of Islam are the basis on which all Muslim teachings of "do and not to do" are based. By definition, without pillars, a building could not be constructed strong, straight forward, and high.

The five pillars can be looked as a table. The first pillar "testimony" is the top of the table that means witness that no god except one and only one God and that prophet Muhammad is His prophet and messenger. The table four legs are the other four pillars:

  • performing praying,
  • paying the Zakah Specific Charity or Alms giving,
  • fasting the month of Ramadan, and
  • pilgrimage (or Hajj) to Mecca if affordable.

The table, as designed with four legs, will not stand with one of these four legs broken or missed.

The Muslim is required to be everywhere considering the both wings of Islam religion:

  • the first wing is to observe the five pillars of Islam by keeping faith in the oness of God and faith in his prophet and by performing the ritual worships (prayer, zakah, fasting pilgrimage) and
  • the second wing is to keep performing good deeds to the benefit of himself, family, community, and mankind.

As no bird can not fly conveniently with only one wing or with one wing weaker than the other, Muslim can't be welcomed in the Heavens unless he is keeping good balance of the two Islam wings.

The 5 pillars of Islam are the basis for the beliefs and for one to become a good Muslim. If these are not regularly established, then one's faith is never complete. One needs to say the shahada and submit, do salah regularly, fast, give zakah, and go to hajj once in their life, and then they will be able to become a better Muslim.

The Islam five pillars (refer to question below) and their significance are as follow:

  1. Testimony that no God except the one and only one God, the Creator and that prophet Muhammad is His messenger. This persuades Muslims not to obey any one in something that against God commands or against His prophet guides
  2. Praying (5 times a day). This persuades Muslims to be always remembering God the Creator and His prophet. Hence this persuades then not to do any wrong.
  3. Alms giving (or zakat). This strengthens the social relations and leads to solidification between the poor and the rich.
  4. fasting Ramadan. This persuades Muslims to be more devoted to God will and refrain themselves from disobeying him and they become more tending to help the poor.
  5. hajj. This persuades Muslims to feel that they are equal and the preference is only in the degree of their piety.

The five Islam pillars are very important because all the Islam teachings, principles, and morals are based on these five pillars. As the pillars are important for a building the pillars are important for the Islam religion.

Moreover, if you deny intentionally any of the five Islam pillars you are considered out of Islam faith and considered no longer Muslim or follower of Islam.

Well Muslims have to perform all of the 5 pillars during their lifetime. Some of the 5 pillars are done on a daily basis and others may be once a year or even once a lifetime.
