What Kind of Engine are you asking about??? There are a couple different types. Some are tapered fit and others are not. But they all need to go on until they stop "SOLID"....or bottom out against the crankshaft lower timing gear/sprocket. If its not fully installed, you will have trouble sooner or later. Also...your accessory drive belts will not line up correctly. Make sure you have any washers/shims or timing belt guide washers installed first. It should be pretty obvious when its on all the way, especially if your using a impact gun. Good Luck
Go to Autozone and tell them u need a harmonic balancer puller
Not too familiar with that engine, but never use a hammer to press it on. Go to your local Kragen, Shucks or autozone, they have a harmonic balancer installer in which you can rent. It simply screws into the center of the shaft and evenly presses the harmonic balancer onto the crankshaft.
get a longer bolt to start it . use this bolt until it is pulled up enuff to start the proper bolt
You can go to a local parts place and rent a chrysler harmonic balancer puller. I just did mine on a 2001 and it costed 75.00 and when I was done they gave me my money back. It is the only way to get it off.
Easiest way is with an air impact. There are strap clamps available that would go around the harmonic balancer that would hold it while the bolt was tightened.
The crankshaft damper is behind the crankshaft pulley.
to my knowledge it is located behind the harmonic balancer. You should be able to c the wires runing to it just to the right of the harmonic balancer. Now if you could help me with information on how to uninstall the harmonic balancer i would greatly appreciate it Thanks. To remove the harmonic balancer you have to buy or rent a harmonic bancer puller. The bolts required for yours may not be included. If not you will have to go to the hardware store and purchace them. You should use the 3 1/2 inch #8 1/4 inch bolt 3 required also buy 3 washers cost under 4 dollars.
You will need to go through the passenger front wheel well (wheel off). Remove belt, remove pulley/balancer with a balancer puller tool. Air tools make this job MUCH easier.
The cranshaft will go in the back of the motor. You will need to place it behind the harmonic balancer. Ths is what my mechanic told me.
Just put the cam bolt back in and tighten it down, it will go back in easy
You need a special tool, a harmonic balancer puller. Go to Autozone and they will usually lend you one for free. VBD
Answertiming out of adjustment. start with distributer timing and go to timing belt or chaincould be the crank position sensor located behind the harmonic balancer
