The timing belt connects your crankshaft to your engine's camshaft(s). It not only makes sure that the valve train opens and closes in synch with the piston movement, it keeps them in time with each other so everything happens at the right time. If the timing belt fails, the valves stop moving regardless of whether they are all the way open or closed. The pistons, however, are still moving for a short time, and this can cause the two to collide, causing serious engine damage. At the very least, the loss of the timing belt will bring the engine to a quick halt and you aren't going anywhere until it's fixed.
