The candidate they chose is usually someone who has great power and influence in politics and society and is popular in the Communist party. The Communist party then uses its power and influence in the government to assure that their candidates wins the election. It is not uncommon for elections in communist countries to be completely rigged by the Communist party. Generally speaking, the secretary of the internal communist party has a great deal of influence and may, for all practical purposes, create a situation where he or she becomes the only viable candidate to lead the government.
It is important to note, however, that the few remaining communist governments in the world- China, Cuba, North Korea, Laos, and Vietnam have their own constitution and set of laws, thus there way of appointing a national leader is likely to vary depending on the country.
