That depends on how familiar the mechanic who does the work is with a 1999 Catera. I had this done recently (not at a dealer) and although they did a nice job, it took longer because they weren't familiar with what you have to do (e.g. remove the intake plenum and the intake manifold and a lot of other things) to get to the valve covers. Since then I've had to remove these parts myself for an unrelated problem and it definitely goes a lot faster once you know what to remove and when. For an experienced mechanic, I'd say 3 to 4 hours.
You have a leaking valve cover gasket. The oil under the cover leaks past the gasket and drips down on your exhaust. It is a $50 part (actually 4 gaskets in the kit) on eBay and a couple hours for a good mechanic to change on this car. It is not a terrible hazard, though might be a slight fire hazard.
I helped a guy change mine (94 es300) and it took about 3 hours, but we were not professionals and had to make a trip to autozone.
about 1 1/2 it is easy take the fan out with it then take it off
On 4 cylinder it takes about 20-30 minutes. For V-6 it might take couple hours.
when I went to Carson Toyota they told me it will be 5 hours of labor @ $111 per hour and the two gaskets are $ 21.00 each. Then they turned around and finished the job in 2 hours. What a rape off that place was.
Depending upon the shops labor rate that you take it in to it should take about 14 hours to remove the heads and reinstall them the head gaskets will range anywhere from 50-100 dollars and their will be valve cover gaskets as well that will usually range from 25-50 dollars. Hope this helps
The year, engine size and if it is the intake manifold or an exhaust manifold gaskets would help.
If you do it yourself, the VC gaskets are $53.00 bucks at Autozone, and it will take you all day. If you take it to the stealership, they will charge you twice that in parts and about 3 hours of shop labor. So you will probably plop down something just shy of $500.00.
I'm doing this now. It's a little daunting, because you have to take off the intake manifold. It's not particularly hard, it just takes time. It took me 4-5 hours to simply get everything taken apart. Lots of hoses and couplers to disconnect. You have to drain about 1/2 gallon of coolant from the radiator before you start. Also, getting all of the gaskets was the hard part. I had to special order most from a Suzuki dealership. Total cost of gaskets: about $120. Gaskets you'll need: - Intake manifold gaskets - Valve cover gaskets - Throttle body gasket (believe me, you'll need it) - Surge tank pipe gaskets (2) (front pipe with two bolts on each side) - Intake collector gaskets (2) (rear pipe with three bolts on each side, to which the throttle body is connected)
probably 10.
You must remove the fuel injector pump which is the biggest part of the project. Really it wasn't too hard with the right tools. These gaskets are common to have a leak, mine was pretty severe (about 1 quart every 100 miles). It took me about 6 hours to get it off with a little help from a friend.
