In the time of Jesus, there was no such thing as an organized, universal (catholic) Christian church. The early Christians had no set liturgy that was shared by all. They pretty much managed to worship however the group thought to be right and proper, getting some theological helps from letters or meetings with various apostles. As the Christian movement became more popular and spread throughout Asia and Europe, various Christian liturgies were codified at different centers. At one point there were a number of Popes claiming their holy sovereignty. Eventually, after several centuries, the Christian center in Rome (which had the greatest Army) was forcefully accepted as the one Catholic Christian church from which the worship liturgy was developed and directed, and various parts of the "Mass" codified.
Roman Catholic AnswerAll the Christians were Catholic after Jesus's death, we do not have a number, but is was a small minority of the population of Israel, which was a very small country. The Catholic church was not called "Catholic" for another 50 to 70 years after that, and it was not called "Roman" until the time of the "protestant reformation" 15 centuries after that. The Church is the Body of Christ, the Church is there to bring God's Word (Jesus) to the world, and the people in the world to God. Even excommunication is a disciplinary action to help people come to their senses; it is certainly not a vindictive punishment, it is an act of love.
