Thomas Jefferson (born April 3, 1743--died July 4, 1826) was the third President of the United States of America. When he took office on March 4, 1801 there were sixteen states. These states were: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Jefferson's presidency lasted from 1801-1809. During his term in office, Ohio joined the United States to become the seventeenth state in 1803.

Also, during Jefferson's term as US president, he engineered the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon.

By the time of George Washington's first election to the U.S. presidency, eleven states, all of the original thirteen except North Carolina and Rhode Island, had ratified the new U.S. Constitution. However, only ten states elected George Washington in 1789. The state legislature of New York became deadlocked in their effort to choose the eight electors to which they were entitled. By the time of Washington's reelection in 1792, two additional states, Vermont, which had been an independent republic, and Kentucky, which had been part of Virginia, had joined the union, making the total number of states fifteen.
