Is there a difference between suspension grease and bearing grease?
There is a difference in the two. Suspension grease will be thinner and the bearing grease would be much thicker in density .
How do you remove pilot bearing without a puller?
You can use the grease method. But first you will need a 6" or longer piece of steel round stock that has the same outside diameter as the inside diameter of the pilot bearing. Now, pack the pilot bearing full of thick axle grease, as much as you can get in there, then insert the round stock into the bearing and strike the round stock hard with a large hammer once or twice. Now repack the bearing with grease and strike it again. Each time you do this the pilot bearing should move out a little bit. After several strikes it will come out all the way.
How do you repack front wheel bearings on a Toyota 4runner?
Pull the wheel front and rear bearing and clean out the old grease. You dont have to be perfect but do a good job. Then clean all the parts of as much of the old greas from the outside and make note of the order for the parts. Pull the seal and replace this part. Now all is clean and ready to re-grease. to pack the bearing you can do it old school or new school. Us old school will place a wad of grease in the palm of one hand and hold the bearing in the other. Then with a push and slide motion you can scrape the edge of the grease and shove it in one of the cracks of the bearins. This forcing motion will shove new grease in the bearing on one end. and the old grease out the other. When new grease is coming out the other end then turn the bearing and do the next ecction of the bearing. Its a long dirty process but it gets the job done. Do bother bearings and then put the parts back together in the back side of the hub. Prior to doing this put a good amount of grese on the bearing surfaces inside the hub. You don't have to plug it up but you dont want the new grease running out the bearing either. Then reinstall the seal and lube the shaft on the car. Reinstall the hub and then do the same thing on the front bearing. New school is the same except you use a bearing packer from a store. All the auto places and even wal mart will carry it. You place the bearing in a holder and use a grease gun to pack the bearing. It is time efficient and once you start to pump the grease you see the old come out the sides. Once all the old is out and new stuff starts coming out you are done. Nice and neat the first time but it uses a bit more grease that can go to waste. Just be careful. Since grease LOVES to hold dirt and debris you need to be super careful after you use it so it stays clean for next time. I just pulled my 96 Toyota bearings and the race and bearings look new. I change the grease about every 50 000 miles and I now have 325000 on the vehicle. So its worth the time.

The rear bearings are in the brake drum hub. When you take off the brake drum, you have to remove the large nut, then a washer, and there is the outer bearing. When the drum is off, pop off the rear seal, and there is the inner bearing. Check the race for the bearing, make sure it is good. If so, then you can just replace the bearings and the rear seal. If the race does not look good, then this is a much harder job to do. If you do not have the tools and know how for this, I do suggest you take the drums to a garage, and have them change the race. This will save you a lot of frustration, believe me. Pack the drum with wheel bearing grease, with a new seal, and do not over load with the grease.

IN REPLACING THE NEW SEAL YOU MUST clean all the grease from the hub to ensure there s no old grease left at least much as possible,then pack the hub with new grease besure not to get grits in to the grease. grits and grease don t mix, then dip the bearing into the grease to ensure that it s fully greased then replace the bearing in the hub and tap on the new hub evenlly or it will not go in right after that your on your way to reassembling the hub to the car.... ENJOY These are a complete hub assembly. They require no packing grease. Remove wheel, brake calapier, calapier bracket, brake rotor, remove the outer tie rod from the knuckle, remove the half saft from the hub( 36mm ) nut. 3 or 4 bolts hold this hub in place. All steps may not be listed, but get'er done. If you are not mechanically inclined do not attempt this.

Oil does make the bearing spin a little easier, but doesn't stay in the bearing very well. If you run oil you need to relube fairly often, or run the risk of trashing the bearings. Grease will spin a little slower, but it'll stay in place better. You can go longer between cleans and lubes. Your choice. Me, I use grease, but a fairly small amount. Means I don't lose that much spin, and the bearings will survive rolling through an occasional puddle. Speaking from personal experience where my step dad was trying to be nice and grease my bearring for me so I would have a smoother ride. No. If it is just a normal wheel grease it is not good. It will give you a smoother and quitter ride, but be expecting to go much slower and getting much more leg exercise from pushing.
