If you mean a "D" under the date, it's not an error, it's the Denver mintmark were the coin was made.

It's not a square. It's the letter "D" indicating that the coin was minted in Denver. Cents minted in Philadelphia don't have mint marks. Other coins minted in Philadelphia and dated 1980 or later have a P mint mark.
The track you are referring to is entitled "The Letter" by The Box Tops, which i assume was released in 1967 or 1968.
