Most Roofing companies will remove the old shingles one day and put your new roof on the next day.

If you are doing this yourself, these are heavy and you'll need an easy way to get them into the dumpster so you don't handle them twice and/or damage the plants around your house. Roofers typically have several people up on the roof at one time.

Do you remove the plastic strip on shingles?

No. It is perfectly fine to leave the plastic strip on. The strip is there to keep the shingles from sticking together in the bundle. Try to remove this strip while doing a ten or fifteen square roof and watch your time a frustration rise.

How do you tie in a porch roof into a house?

Before tying a porch roof into a house, it needs to be determined whether the house foundation is stable enough for the porch roof. Once this is determined, a person can use rafters or trusses to tie the porch roof onto the house.

When do I need to replace my roof?

the first sign would be a leak in the roof that is visible from the interior or under roof eaves, etc. depending on the type of roofing material: aspalt type shingles should have the roof granules in place and should not be curled or cracked, wood shingles should be flat. if a few shingles are damaged, they can be replaced on an individual basis. if larger areas are damaged then the hole roof or the exposure should be replaced.

How often should you re-shingle your roof?

There is not a set number of years, but if your roof has multiple leaks, the shingles are asphalt and show signs of curling or buckling, your gutters are full of the granules which cover the asphalt shingles, or you want to give your home a new appearance, then it would be time to check into it.

Will your homeowners policy cover the cost of a new roof The last owners had roof recovered in 1995 and the shingles are starting to curl up and look bad?

No, insurance will not cover a roof, but if you purchased the home with any kind of warranty you might be able to get some help there. If shingles go bad that fast it's probably because of improper air circulation in the attic. If the attic gets much hotter than the outside air it will cause the shingles to curl and loose their mineral surface. Next time the roof is replaced, make sure you have the roofer put in some attic vents to keep the temperature down.

Can you install dimensional shingles over dimensional shingles?

Any time you layer on top of existing shingles you cut down the life span of the new roof. (Roof gets hotter and so the materials deteriorate faster.) So you may be able to do it (check local codes) but it isn't advisable. If you're looking to save, you may be able to do the tear-off yourself.

Can you place composition shingles over wood shake?

You can, but it is not recommended. It used to be done all the time when asphalt shingles first started to be used. It makes for a lumpy roof and will puncture easier from hail or being walked on.

Roof Shingles of Many Kinds?

In the old days, and that may be just a couple of decades ago, roof shingles were just a plain thing. When a new roof was needed, it was replaced because of necessity. There was no real concern about what color it was or what design. Nowadays, that is all changed. Roof shingles have become a very decorative part outside of the house just like the furniture and paintings are inside the house. No matter what the roof shingles are made of, in today’s world they are mostly made to have a UV and a moisture barrier which will prevent leaks. Good roof shingles will also help create good attic ventilation. There are beautiful colors of shingles that make a roof something to look at. The shingles can match any shutters on the home, or offset the color of the siding or bricks used on the home. There are sky blues, bright greens, reds, oranges, and other bright shades. There are also the more neutral colors such as black, taupe, light tan, brown, slate, light and dark grays and even white which can be very dazzling. Some of these colors can be combined together on a roof to make it a very eye-catching appearance. Many of the shingles are actually two or three colors each and this also adds to the beauty of the home. There are even shingles that are more energy-efficient. These shingles will keep the heating and cooling bills down. The shingles are highly reflective which keep the home from being too hot or too cold. The material that is mostly used for roof shingles is asphalt. Slate shingles have been used for a long time, and they are also still used today. The shapes are rectangular, and some are oval-shaped. When the oval shingles are laid on the roof, they overlap each other which give the roof a wood shake look. There are some shingles that are thicker and sturdier for even more protection from the weather over many years. However, a good roofing company will offer a good guaranty for either decades or a lifetime. If your budget is a problem, there are still good roof shingles that can be used without spending a lot of money.

Roof Shingles are an Important Part of Your Home?

If you are a homeowner, then you may have found that maintaining your home is a bit more difficult than you anticipated. When you merely rented your home, you never really had to worry too much about maintaining the property. That was mostly the duty of your landlord. Now that you are the proud owner of your own home, maintenance comes to the forefront as an extremely important aspect of your life. Not only do you need to keep your home maintained so that your family can live in a sound home, but you also need to worry about keeping the value of your home high in case you decide that you would like to sell your home in the future. One of the most important factors in home maintenance is the roof. The roof has two important aspects. The first is the outward appearance. The last thing that you want associated with your home is a shabby roof. Your roof is made up of individual roof shingles, and ideally you would like to keep those shingles in great shape. There are several different types of shingles to choose from. Perhaps the most common is wood shingles. Wood shingles have the advantage of carrying a fairly low cost, but they also wear out relatively sooner than other types of shingles. If you want more durable or better looking shingles, then you might want to consider metal shingles. The other important consideration about shingles is their functionality. No matter how great a set of shingles may look - they aren’t much use to you if they don’t do their job. The most obvious time that you need your shingles to work great is when it is raining outside. Without a good set of shingles, you may find yourself running to set up a series of buckets to protect your floors and furniture from your leaky roof. If you do have a solid roof, then you and your family will be able to rest comfortably inside your home even in the worst weather conditions. Although it may seem as if it is a trivial matter, a roof is actually extremely important to you and your family’s well-being and happiness in your home.

Should depreciation on a 40 year shingle be the same as a 20 year shingle in OKlahoma on a roof 6 years old?

Is this to calculate the value of the roof for a warranty replacement? Generally a roof warranty is only for the materials and is prorated based on the warranty period of the roof and the time elapsed. For a 20 year roof the depreciation would be 6/20 or 30% of the original material price of the shingles. For a 40 year roof it would be 6/40 or 15% of the replacement cost of the shingles. Read the warranty that came with your shingles to get the details of how it would be applied in your case. Local laws may also change how the warranty is applied.

Inspect your Roof without Walking on the Roofing Shingles?

Every roof requires regular inspections so repairs can be made before leaks set in. You can inspect your roof without every setting foot on your shingles by using a pair of binoculars. Staying on the ground and using your binoculars, you can inspect the shingles all around your roof. Look for any that are curled, broken or missing completely. The attic should be inspected for leaks. The binoculars and a good flashlight will allow you to see throughout the attic. Watch closely for rust stains on the nails and condensation. Finally, step back and look at the overall roof. Dark stains running down the shingles indicate a loss of the protective granules and could indicate that it's time for a new roof.

Is roof shingles color fade with time?

Shingles are a lot like floors. The patterns change every few years as well as the colors. When a shingle is installed on a roof it will definitely fade with time. It is best to save some shingle packages from the initial installation to replace any shingles for roof patching in the future. The sun and the heat from the surface of the roof bake a shingle. The oils will eventually bake out and the shingle becomes brittle. If you were to break a corner off a shingle and it is pliable it is still doing well. If it breaks easily than you will find little stones in your rain gutters showing its deterioration. This will than break apart in wind storms.
