The distributor by-pass wire, seems to be the wire that runs from the distributor to the ECM module. Just disconnect it and retime, then plug it back in. If you have checked Top Dead Center on number 1 piston then all you have to do is move the distributor cap by untightening the 9/16's bolt below the distributor housing. This will allow you to rotate the distributor with the cap on to increase or decrease the rpm's at idle. You will need to tighten the bolt holding the distributor metal plate down after Idle is running smooth or the distributor will move when the vehicle is shut off. To remove the wire from the back of the ECM (Electronic Control Module) you will need to remove the distributor cap and two connectors that run to the coil pack from the distributor.

the firing order is 18436572. The Distributor location of no 1 is usually on the front to the right of the Dist. hold down clip. But, that can be changed depending on where you locate the Dist. in the block.

1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2# 1 WILL BE RELITIVE TO THE POSITION OF THE DIST. TYPICALY IT WILL BE THE TERMINAL ON THE FRONT RIGHT LOOKING AT THE ENGINE FROM THE FRONT, BUT IF THE OIL PUMP DRIVE SHAFT HAS BEEN ROTATED IN THE BLOCK INADVERTANTLY IN THE COURSE OF PULLING THE DIST. IT CAN BE ANYWHERE. IF THE ENGINE BACKFIRES THROUGH THE CARB. AND THE DIST. HAS BEEN REMOVED THEN ROTATE THE DIST SHAFT (ROTOR) 180 DEGREES.
disconnect neg(-) terminal of battery.remove spark plug wires at distribator cap.then remove cap hold down screws.next locate disttribator hold down boltand set aside pull up on dist and notice the direction of rotor turns mark location of before and after.(this is for setting back in place later)place dist.in a soft jaw vice and remove roll pin from gear&remove gear and pull shaft out of housing.pick up coil is ready Tobe removed first unplug wires from module. locate clip hold down and replace pick up.reverce toinstall and check ingition timing.

May be an auto resetting breaker in the main power dist. box under hood
first check injector pulse if it does not work replace module in dist.
If engine turns over but dist. doesn't turn you either have a broken dist. drive hex shaft , broken dist. shaft or holding pin for dist. drive gear on bottom of dist. has sheared off.Pull off dist. cap and try to turn rotor on end of shaft. It should not turn freely.If it does then pull dist. out of motor by removing hold down clamp. Mark rotor position with felt pen mark on dist. housing before removing dist. for proper replacement position.

disconnect the tan wire connector on the passenger side wiring harness , that puts it in bypass mode, unlock dist. bolt and adjust timing. when set reconnect wiring connector.
